[@Lovejoy]  It might be possible to see more detail in the ether flow through machines within arm's reach, with full concentration to the exclusion of all else.  I could see enchanted goggles allowing that.  Or how the innards of the object are set up -- but again, extreme short range, and requires a high level of focus.
