Their father, Gorwin Zinnorin, was a rich dark elf man, who was married to a powerful dark elf woman. The naive Thalia became his mistress, and was completely madly in love with Gorwin. Unfortunately this could not be said for Gorwin whose infatuation waned after about a year, and altogether disappeared when Thalia told him she was pregnant. Gorwin's wife, Ravenna, turned a blind eye to the many woman, but she if she found out about Thalia's pregnancy she'd have them both killed. So Gorwin set pregnant Thalia up in a small cottage in the outer city near the wall, and payed her monthly to keep quite. The twins, Nedra and Arden were born in the middle of the summer. Thalia had held out hope that once Gorwin came to see his son and daughter, he would leave his wife and marry her. She sent news of their birth, but three months past without a word. Then she received a letter from Gorwin saying he would never see her again, and that the children were bastards he wanted nothing to do with. Thalia still hoped, and still believed that as long as Gorwin just meet his children he would change his mind. The first three years of the twins life was spent in that little cottage near the wall. Thalia sent a letter every other day to Gorwin, and every month she would end up with a bundle of them back, stamped return to sender. To the twins their life was idyllic, they toddled around in the tiny garden, played in the attic, listened to their mother tell stories and sing. A few months after their third birthday, their mother packed a bag, and took them to the Zinnorin tower where Dorian and his wife lived. A servant answered the door, and lead the three of them into a sitting room. Ravenna entered a few minuets later, and immediately knew who Thalia was, and obviously who the father of the twins were. Ravenna said nothing about it, she just smiled and sent the servants to fetch tea. Ravenna let her rage boil inside her, as she acted the generous hostess to her husbands whore, and little bastards. She even had a guest room prepared for Thalia and the twins. When they had gone to bed Ravenna sat and waited for Gorwin to come home. He came home hours later drunk from a party, smelling of perfume with a kiss mark on neck. Ravenna explained that they had guests, and her fake smile was replaced with a look of pure fury. A fight ensued like no other. Little Nedra awoke to the screaming, and so did Thalia. She ran out of the room to find Gorwin bleeding in the great hall, and Ravenna looking like a wild animal. Thalia's throat was slit in a matter of seconds by Ravenna, and Gorwin stared at the scene. Nedra and Arden peeked around the doorway, with tears on their faces. They had no idea what was going on, but the screaming, blood, and rage scared them. Nedra ran over to their mothers corpse, the warm red blood soaking into her cotton nightdress, and covering her bare feet. Arden followed behind, never looking away from the frighting Ravenna, who earlier had smiled and served them cookies. Ravenna was coming down from the fury and adrenaline enough to see that servants were gathering to witness. She ordered Gorwin to clean it up, and take care of the rat children properly. She then left the room, and went to bed. Gorwin got rid of the body easily, tossing it outside the wall, and watching as a beast dragged it off into the forest. He knew what Ravenna meant by take care of the children. They were obviously his half breeds, both with the same pointed ears, and dark skin as he. Arden even had the same rare silver eyes Zinnorin's family was known for. But the golden hair, and Nedra's green eyes was all Thalia. Oddly killing them didn't come easy to him. So He left them drugged asleep on the doorstep of a crumbling orphanage in the middle of the slums. The orphanage was not a happy place. It was overcrowded, the food was rotten if not scarce, the staff was neglectful, and some even abusive. Unfortunately even though the twins were at a desirable age for adoption, the fact that they were clearly mixed race made their chances of finding a family slim to none. An older boy, Zenith, took it upon himself to watch out for the twins. Zenith was half Qunari, and had been at the orphanage for four years now. Though he was only eight, he was bigger and stronger then the older kids who basically ran the place. Zenith protected the twins, made sure no one stole their food, or hurt them. When the twins were five years old the orphanage lost all funding and was altogether abandoned by the people in charge. The crumbling orphanage and the children within were left to fend for themselves in the middle of the slums. The half dozen or so teenagers that stuck around ended up becoming the leaders, and turning the place into a den of sorts. They learned to pick pockets, steal food, and send the younger kids to beg for money on the streets. If you wanted to stay you had to do what they said. Zenith made good with the leaders, and the twins became proficient in begging, and detracting vendors so the others could steal. Learning to pick pockets and locks came next. For about two years this went on. They were seven years old when the crumbling orphanage was bought out, and torn down. They lost their home again. Most of the children were rounded up by authorities. The youngest kids were sent to a new orphanage in the eastern part of the city, and the older kids were sent to work houses, factories, and farms. They were all split up. Zenith was sent to the outer city, recruited to train as a solider or something. Nedra was sent to the Canterbury workhouse for girls. Arden was placed in a jail cell after he was found with six stolen wallets on his person. Six month later Arden was let out, into the custody of a Mr. Victor Hennick. little did he know this man was Revanna's privet eye, and had been looking for Nedra and Arden for a year. After Ravenna found out Gorwin didn't kill them, she somehow had a change of heart and wanted them for herself. As she was unable to have children of her own, Gorwin's bastards seemed the next best thing. So she hired Mr. Hennick, and decided she would either keep them or kill them once she saw them again. Gorwin knew nothing about all this. Thankfully Victor was greedy, and so he left Arden in the care of his sister, Elise, and kept searching for Nedra. His plan was to tell Gorwin once he had both kids, and get him to pay double what Ravenna was to keep the kids hidden from her. It took five more months, and a lot of bribery to track down Nedra in the workhouse. Victor took her to Elise's home, and the twins reunited after eleven months apart. Nedra had been punished a lot in the workhouse, various scars now covered her back, and her once bright eyes were full of fear. Arden looked much better, not like the skin, bones, and bruises he had been most of his life. Elise had grown attached and spoiled him with love and lots of food. He never wanted to leave. Victor made his offer to Gorwin a week later. Gorwin payed the money, and told him to send the kids somewhere Ravenna couldn't find him. Unfortunately that meant the kids couldn't stay with Elise, who lived in the same part of the city as Ravenna and Gorwin. It took a few weeks but, Victor tracked down Thalia's older sister, Phyllis Wallace. Phyllis was all to happy to hear that she had a niece and nephew. Oddly the news that Thalia had died years ago didn't seem to affect the woman. Much to Elise's displeasure and Arden's pleading, Victor took the kids in the dead of night and left them with their Aunt Phyllis. Life was very different for the eight year old twins. Their aunt was the madam of a brothel, and they spent most of their day cleaning, and cooking, for the prostitutes that lived there. Nights for Nedra were spent handing out drinks to clients, and Arden was tasked with keeping the illegitimate toddlers occupied in the basement. Nedra was eleven years old when her aunt sold her virginity off to the highest bidder. She had hit, kicked, and scratched hard enough to draw blood, but the real kicker was she had bitten the bastards ear off. Afterwards Phyllis had her flogged for injuring the customer who purchased her for the night. Then she told Nedra that she was old enough to earn her keep, and expected her to smile from now on. Arden was becoming a problem, and Phyllis was making plans to sell him off soon. The twins ran away two weeks later, and at the age of eleven they were on their own. They didn't really know what to do with themselves. They slept in alleys, and under bridges. They ate garbage, and stole food when they could. With winter on it's way they were going to freeze to death if they didn't figure something out. Nedra suggested they leave the city and go outside the wall, her fantasy was to live among the lost ones in the beautiful free world away from this hell hole. Arden thought she was crazy, and that they should go back to Elise's house, or their fathers. So that became the plan. They had knocked on the door of Elise's old house to find a dwarf woman answer. She explain Elise had gotten married and moved away. Arden felt abandoned for some reason, and so Nedra suggested her idea again. Arden still held hope that their father would take them in. So they made their way to Zinnorin tower. The same servant who had lead them into the house so many years ago, did so again. This time he knew who they were, and was absolutely shocked to see them. They stood awkwardly in the entrance, and the servant man ran off to tell Gorwin. Gorwin appeared minutes later, and Nedra remembered standing in a pool of blood staring down at her mother crumpled on the marble floors of this house. He looked like a darker older version on Arden, but with black hair instead of gold. Arden stood as strait as he could and introduce himself. Nedra pulled on Arden sleeve, wanting to leave. Gorwin looked annoyed, but shook Arden's outstretch hand. And then the stood their in silence, until Gorwin told them they shouldn't be here and need to leave. Those words were like a slap in the face to Arden, but it just pissed Nedra off. She stood beside her brother, and glared at Gorwin. By some miracle Zenith, now sixteen and dressed in a solider uniform appeared before them.
