Name: Austen Corby Gender: Male Age: 23 Rank: Corporal Former Regiment(s): Cadian 117th Regiment Speciality/Role: Infantryman Personal Demeanour: Austen is to the point and forward, honest to each superior and obedient to each order. But his behavior in the presence of superiors does not dictate all. He is approachable, down-to-earth, and enjoys humor even in the worst situations. As blindly as he follows orders, he attempts to be a genuine and kind person. His combat experience did not jade or break him. Will-breaking was for basic training, and being jaded was for those who lost it all. He kept light spirits despite his extensive deployments, sub-par rations, and long nights under a rain of shells and fire. He starved in foxholes and camped in waterlogged trenches, but he kept his wits and faith in the Emperor through it all. His faith as well was unbreakable, as his indoctrination as a son of Cadia brought him up as a faithful servant of the Emperor. It often had been what gave him his sanity on the battlefield, and he carries still a blessed pendant given to him during his service. Description: Austen stands at 5’10”, weighing in at a fair 176 lbs. His build is muscular, but only enough to pass for field work, not anywhere near bodybuilder or Catachan levels. His hair is dark brown, his eyes a hazel, and he is spared of most scars, save for a burn scar which creeps up his lower left leg. He wears the normal tan uniform, formed at the base level by tough woolen trousers, made resistant to tears, flames, and certain acidic compounds. Followed by it is a shirt of a comfortable synthetic weave, colored olive drab and worn below the thick tunic jacket of the same material as the trousers. Worn on the right shoulder of the tunic is his rank insignia, two stacked chevrons denoting him a Corporal, with a small tab below it listing his blood type. The opposing shoulder bears an olive drab patch with the large white stenciled numbers “117”, and below it identifying him of 2nd Platoon, Company K. He wears the steel-toed black synthleather boots as issued. (Subject to change based on reassignment.) His armor is as standard as it comes, a set of olive drab flak armor as issued. At the base level is the chestplate, a curved ceramic piece cut off above the stomach and wrapping around the entire upper body while allowing freedom of movement. Pauldrons are attached at the shoulders, with the right bearing yet again his rank and blood type, and the left marked with the regiment and company flashers. The final portion is the helmet, casing the cranium with a thick layer of ceramic and plastics designed to deflect shrapnel and ambient heat, but not take a direct hit, yet it’s better than nothing, and is probably the difference between an open and closed casket funeral. (Subject to change based on reassignment.) Service Record (History): Austen was born upon an Imperial Navy transport to a family of Cadian descent, a military environment, as a child to two members of the 117th Cadian, a father as a Sergeant, and a mother as a nurse. He was raised as the regiment went to and from campaigns during the Indomitus Crusade. As the second generation to be raised on the vessel, with his parents and their peers having been the first, he received all the fanfare as if Cadia had been transplanted directly to the ship. He underwent basic education and military instruction until the age of 14, when he became a litter bearer, being two years short of being authorized to join the Youth Contingent, the 'Whiteshields'. It was in this role he had his first taste of combat, helping carry the wounded from the embattlements to the trenches with other children his age. This would end after two months of deployment, and would be his only combat experience before becoming a 'Whiteshield'. He attained such a role upon his 16th birthday, issued his first lasrifle, the same he currently carries, and given his assignment. Merely a year after, a new deployment saw another venture into the trenches, only now he could shoot back. His unit, an attache to an organic infantry company, was decimated in the forward positions, and was where he received his only wound. For valor and service to the Emperor, the surviving members of the Youth Contingent were instated as proper Guardsmen, and were given their regimental and company insignias, barely in time for the next battle where his company, made of the survivors of the Youth Contingent and the remnants of regular companies and platoons that were decimated, were thrown into the enemy positions, having taken them in a two-year campaign before departing once more. It was for valor that Austen was promoted to Corporal at the young age of 21, given a small command of three other Guardsmen within his squad. Their departure from the battlefield for the next year and a half gave maturity to the now third generation raised on the vessel, who now bolstered the Youth Contingent's ranks. The 117th was ready for the next fight, and was once again deployed. And the last fight with the 117th, for Austen at least. At the Battle of Raukos the 117th was deployed along with a slew of other regiments to take and hold the fortresses the Astartes spearhead barreled through. The 117th, though not meant for the frontal assault, was thrown against the array of fortresses held by the Iron Warriors, but, following the Astartes which pushed through, had taken their fortress in four hours, and the whole array of fortresses was taken by the combined Imperial force in only five hours. Austen, having demonstrated again extreme competence and valor, was passed up for promotion this time, due to his age and relative inexperience, but was rather offered a position in the Ordo Nominis Umbra.
