It appeared to be force and void of much desire on Lady Munn's part, something that struck her as all the more curious. Lady Munn didn't strike her as the sort to enter courtship without having affection for the other. But yet, she could not in good confidence believe that Lady Munn had any feelings for the Lord Captain that went beyond friendship. Her eyes flickered to the shadow waiting outside the door. As Peter explained it was a friend of his from the War, Nora began to understand Lauren's reaction. Nora's brother, Ernest, had died in the War. However, she hadn't been able to see his body. His casket was closed during the funeral, in order to preserve everyone's genteel sensibilities. Her sisters and mother were practically inconsolable that day, Nora recalled, wailing loudly enough to wake the dead. Nora had cried quietly into a handkerchief. She didn't wish to create a spectacle of herself. Yet even with the aid of Peter's preparation, it was not enough. As George entered the room and raised his head, Nora looked at him directly. She found that she couldn't look away and as she stared into his false eye, she let out a shrill and violent scream. She felt like a small girl once more, on the brink of death due to illness. George's false eye was a portal through which Death itself seemed to be staring back at her. And before she could even mumble an apology for the scream or come to her senses, she collapsed to the ground with a thud, seconds after Mahendra had done the very same.
