I've always told players in my games that real life comes first. Just let me know if something's coming up and I don't mind letting people take the time they need to get life squared away.

I'm trying something in my new RP where the GMs post approximately every 2-3weeks to keep things moving regardless of player activity without penalizing people who didn't post in that rotation. I mean, if someone vanishes for a month without a word, chances are I'll cut them loose, but keep somewhat active? Everything is kosher.
