It really depends. Why are the monsters there? Where did they come from? Are we possibly related to the monsters in some way (because we have powers?)

If the monsters had a reason and some good plot devices, I think monsters could be more interesting. But if they were just there for no reason it wouldn't be as good, you know what I mean? 

I vote monsters at the end of the day, however.
