 The tree itself is nearly 400 metres tall making it impervious to a simple fire-based assault. Inside it is incredibly spacious with multiple levels of living areas. The top most sections are the areas in which users of the clan's prestigious Kekkei Genkai live. Otherwise the rest live below them. The area is especially defensible due to its nature as a massive tree, it is incredibly difficult to set something like that on fire and as such the clan has built their defenses around that.

The clan heads' family is the only one permitted to live here, and even be on the floor. The only exception to this rule is a personal invitation from the head of the clan him or herself. There they also have a refining process for the sap from the roots of the tree they live in. This sap is a perfect coagulent and is often used to stop clan members from profuse bleeding. Firstly, it is a training ground for those with the Kekkei Genkai in the clan. Most others are not permitted to become shinobi except for major exceptions typically made by the clan head. It is also used by young members of the clan to attempt to activate their Kekkei Genkai for the first time. This is something of a spiritual experience for many clan members and those who undertake are seen as brave and worthy of praise - regardless of the results. [/i][/indent][/indent][/indent]

[sup][color=gray]Before the creation of Ninshu and the rise of Ninjutsu and other shinobi arts.[/color][/sup]
[indent]The Sōzōgainen clan was a clan of lumberers before the advent of Ninshu. They made a name for themselves by carving out the first level of what would later become the compound for the clan and living within this massive tree. This tree was modeled after the miracle that was the birthplace of this clan, the tree with a waterfall inside it from the beginning of their migration. While this one did not have a waterfall, it was much taller and they would be able to construct a compound the likes of which had never been seen. They utilized animalistic skills in order to survive crude winters, burrowing deep into the earth where the roots sucked any moisture out of the air. During this stage the clan thought only of artisinal creations, not of warfare. They hunted, but not above their means. It was also around this time that this compound became a beacon of trade. With whosoever had been leading the clan marketing their artisinal goods and medicines out to other clans. They became well known in this aspect.

While the Sage of Six Paths and his sons were out walking the world and performing miracles, the Sōzōgainen clan largely ignored them. They presented their own faiths and life as a sort of third path to be taken. Instead of regarding either Indra or Asura as their deity or figure of worship. The entire notion of his plan, order through power, felt naive. Order could be maintained in a myriad of ways, but the general word of mouth in the tree was that should something like that knock on Sōzōgainen doors, they would require an answer.

[sup][color=gray]The period of time where the Rikudō no Shinsen introduced Ninshu to the world.[/color][/sup]
[indent]Neutrality was still at the roots of the the Sōzōgainen clan. However once Ninshu was introduced to the world at large everything changed with a single baby boy. As described by the elders of the clan, the tree seemed to speak to him in a way no one else could.
 He would spend all of his time staring at the tree, touching it with a flat, steady, palm. It wasn't until he was ten years old however that he was capable of manipulating the tree. A young girl, only nine at the time was the first to inherit the Sōzōgainen Kekkei Genkai.
 始完 or the Hajimekan. She was capable of harnessing the chakra in the area, from herself, even from plantlife and use it to create.
 At first it was simply a dull pale blue ball. But soon in the years to come it was arrows for her bow, birds to scout the fields ahead, and even arrows bigger than some of the roots of the trees. They were both the first two shinobi of the Sōzōgainen clan and ended up marrying and bearing multiple children.

During the age of Ninshu, before the Sengoku Jidai began it was hastily becoming clearer that lines were being drawn in the sand and a religious war could very well start. Crusades over Indra and Asura were on the horizon. As such the Sōzōgainen clan stuck to their ways. As far as regular citizens were aware. But the young boy who learned Wood Release, the father of Sōzōgainen Kaede the current clan head, created a small team. They did so because there was another clan who he felt threatened the existence of the Sōzōgainen.

As such he left out on a subtle assassination mission. This fated mission would end up being successful, the assassination of the head of a clan whose specialty lied within manipulating the earth. However, the goal was certainly not ascertained. In fact, the murder of a clan head and his young children would become a sore spot for the entire area. While there was no proof that had tied the Sōzōgainen clan to the incident there was suspicion for decades to come. Especially once Kaede became head of the clan and the Sengoku Jidai was to properly start. [/indent][/indent]

[indent]Once Sōzōgainen Kaede became the head of the clan through a trial of combat she decided to seal the clan in on itself. To look inwardly for answers. The tree, while at a massive point of vantage in the area of warring clans, has not been taken. This is primarily due to Kaede's notion of combat. She has defended the tree, only allowing merchants and hutners to exit the clan's domain. Everyone else is either training or refining their art, skills, or their abilities as men and women. Kaede's notion of the perfect defense is one that will pay off in time. Once other clans mop up most of the weaker clans that are roaming around she will then begin to sweep up the mess and take her seat as a ruler.

Until then she refuses to wade into the tides of war, lest an unluckly sortie result in massive loss of life. Instead of using her men and woman to expand her territory she has asked them to wait out the cold winter of war and wait for new opportunity in the springtime of peace. In which many if not all clans will be weakened and she will be capable of taking her clan to task against the others. 

This policy has made her incredibly popular with her clansmen as they are looking upon themselves they are also free to not be forced into war. As such, especially with older clansmen she has become a rallying point and no other political leader is currently at large in the clan. This has attributed to her claim as the leader of the clan and as she also possesses the clan's Kekkei Genkai she has absolutely no loyalty issues at the moment.

She is also using this tortoise shell technique in order to parley with other clans. As the Sōzōgainen clan has been known to not be involved with conflict she has become an important source of healing, food, medicine, and trade in the area for clans that are constantly doing combat. Even with every clan substantially weakened, Kaede is not so stupid as to assume that she does not need the help of others in order to take a seat on the throne of this land.[/indent][/indent][/hider]
