Came in as a voluntary replacement in October 1966 with Edward Rosenburg. Both were to replace combat-losses sustained on patrols. Therefore he was selected as the unit's "gopher".

Aside from standard-kit, he had a Remmington 870 sent in from home, and had it modified with a 'duckbill' spreader-choke and extended magazine.
