[@Muttonhawk] Hmm, I would not word those sentences like that. Purely based on intuition, I would write: 'Cinead lay awake, staring...Inga's breathing rose and lowered gently beside him.' (I'm not sure, but something about the word 'lowered' makes me slightly uncomfortable. I'd probably use 'fell' rather than 'lowered'). Tbh, I find the word 'lied' slightly problematic when using it. It always sounds clumsy. Rather than, say, 'And there, under the tree, where we lied many a night...', I'd replace 'lied' with 'lay' in every situation. I don't think I would ever use the word 'lied' unless it is in its 'dishonesty' meaning.
