[@Ink Blood][@Loki Odinson] Actually you're both correct, to a point! The motes mostly teleport around the world as your character knows it -- but a few stops might be a bit more trippy than others. The first stop will be the scene of the first player's mini-adventure, so likely someplace else in the familiar world (that you've just altered by dropping a mote on it). You can make an argument for having your character already be at that place when the mote shows up, but you'll also have to have a reason to interact with the plot in the first place, since you'll already be in a different situation. From a personal/GM standpoint, I strongly prefer that all characters start out in exactly the same circumstance. Call it a bonding experience. :)
