To understand Caelan is to understand the history of his family, once a prominent political dynasty in the United Kingdom. They have since fallen into disrepute, however, after an infamous scandal that spread across the tabloids and newspapers of the country like wildfire. As most political dynasties tend to do, the Emsworth name came into prestige after the successful ambition of one man. The grandfather of Caelan, Henry Emsworth. [sub] Henry [/sub]
"What does the Conservative Party offer a working class kid from Brixton? They made him Prime Minister." - John Major, Prime Minister from 1990-1997 These would be the words that would inspire Henry to pursue a career in politics, and ultimately change the lives of his descendants forever. In 1964, Henry was born into a typical, working-class family in Liverpool. While they did not struggle for the basic necessities of life, they lacked instead the luxury and pleasures that money can bring. No holidays, no meals out, one birthday present, two for christmas. His father, a bricklayer, and his mother, a beautician, had come themselves from that life of poverty and had worked hard to ensure their children would not suffer as they did. Much like every other set of parents in the world, they wanted a better life for their child, and to their credit, they had given Henry a better life than they themselves had known. No - they did not become millionaires, they weren't especially academic, and they never had grand ambition. But they were honest, hard-working, and driven. These values, more than anything else, were instilled into Henry from a young age. Henry was the eldest of six children. Four younger sisters, and two brothers, younger still. When he was seven years old he found himself sharing the responsibility for the wellbeing of his siblings with his parents, who were forced to work most days of the week in order to pay rent for their apartment. This was not an apartment that would be recognised by most students of Beverly Hills High School, however. The walls, riddled with damp, were a depressing beige. Four bedrooms housed the eight inhabitants, and one small kitchen area allowed for the preparation of basic meals. The bathroom, if it can be called that, was communal and shared between three floors. The vivid memories of this first home would stay with Henry throughout his life, and if there is one thing he positively attributes to the accomodation, it is that it provided the much-needed inspiration for Henry to improve the circumstances of his life.
"That home of mine - that childhood horror - it pushed me to be better. I owe it everything, and I owe it to this nation to ensure those slums are a thing of the past." - Henry Emsworth, in an interview with David Harolds of The Guardian, 2031.
The school attended by Henry, the Walsey School for Boys, was not an outstanding one. In fact, it routinely failed to meet the standard set by the National Education Inspectors, and permanently hindered the life-chances of many who attended it. The teachers, though they worked hard and are undoubtedly remembered fondly by the children, were hampered by a lack of resources and a lack of care from the local council. Henry, despite his ambition, his strive to be better, was no exception. He felt disillusioned with the life he had been born into, and his grades suffered as he fell into the dreaded cycle of falling in with the wrong crowds, caused mischeif, and missing school. On his sixteenth birthday, he left higher education despite the protests of his parents. Indeed, while they tried hard to keep their eldest son on the straight line, they had five other children to look out for. Henry slipped through the net, and was seemingly doomed to remain at his current station in life. Finding employment as an assistant to a toolmaker by the time he was seventeen, his life fell into a dull repetition. He was, however, finally able to move out and find his own home in 1983, which was no small feat. He would continue to work in the same capacity for the next seven years, living through the era of 'political discontent' with the incumbent Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, who introduced sweeping and deeply unpopular reform that affected, more than anyone, the working-class. It would not be until 1990 that Henry would actively take an interest in politics. John Major, the Conservative Prime Minister sold to the public as a 'working class boy', drew the attention of Henry. Here, he found a man to whom he could relate. A man who had made something more of his life, and was now working to help others improve their lives, too. Henry had long been accustomed to helping the other members of his family, his younger siblings, and the ideals of his hard-working parents had not been entirely lost on him. Deciding to approach the Conservative Party with an interest to stand as a candidate in 1991, his life story caught their attention. To the political machine, and to a political party often derided as being a 'party for the rich', the possibility of putting forward a strongly working-class candidate who shared their values was an offer too good to refuse. In 1992, Henry got his chance. The election was a great success for the party - and for Henry. At the age of 28, he became an elected Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom. Now earning a substantial salary, and given the freedom to have accomodation in London paid for by the government, he was thrust into a life he had never known. His first government post came in 1994, as a Minister in the Transport Department. It was during his time in this department that he would meet Laura, a civil servant who would later become his wife. In 1997 the two were married, and in 1998 they had a son, George Emsworth.
[sub] George [/sub]
When George was born, his father was rising through the ranks of the Conservative Party and was already regarded as one of the 'rising stars'. With the increased status, naturally, came an increased flow of money. This was put to good use, and George was raised in significantly better surroundings than his father. He was born and raised in London, attending a selection of private schools throughout his youth that set him up with the education he needed to succeed in life. By the time he was five, he had a younger brother and sister who would go on to reap the same benefits he had. For Henry - it could not have been more perfect. Though the Conservative Party, in 2003, was now out of power, he had been using the time to befriend his fellow colleagues from the political class and move his way through the social circles of high-society. Fundraisers, often hosted by wealthy donors, proved a particularly efficient way to meet the power-brokers and most influential businesspersons of British society. At the same time, he had three intelligent children to continue the legacy of the family - something that had now become his obsession. Whether it was the sudden wealth he had found himself in (earned through giving speeches to dinners, advice to think-tanks and public events, all in addition to his base salary), or a progression of his long-held desire to improve the circumstances of his life, Henry's focus now was to create a political dynasty and family legacy that would continue on even after his passing. His three children, George, Harry and Abigail, would help him accomplish that goal. When George was of age, he attended King's Public Academy in London, where he would recieve education until the age of 18 when he would move to University. During his years at King's, he found a particular skill in the subjects of English, Modern Studies and other essay-based subjects. He had a natural way with words, and as was increasingly evident, a great affinity for public speaking and debating. Becoming captain of his schools debating team at 16, he was occasionally sent across the country to compete in competitions, which they often won. He was a natural prodigy for Henry, who by the time George was 18, had now held several senior cabinet positions in government over the past six years (after the Conservatives finally returned to power in the 2010 General Election). Indeed, the Emsworth family name was already becoming a recognised stable of British politics. For George however, the next step in his journey was to attend university. George was encouraged to apply for Oxford with his above-average grades, and he did as such, applying to study Political Science at Oxford University. He recieved an unconditional offer some time later, and his studies at Oxford began. While at the University, he was initiated into the 'Bullingdon Club', an elite and secretive club that was already infamous across Britain for harbouring many future-leaders and senior politicians. While the activities of the club are kept a close secret, it is more-or-less public knowledge that the Bullingdon Boys often host extravagant champagne parties and other such feats of indulgence and luxury. Indeed, with such an upbringing, it is not hard to imagine how he became 'isolated', or accused of 'living in a bubble', disconnected from the real world. In truth, he was. It was hard to appreciate the upbringing his father had struggled through when George himself had not experienced such circumstances, and he soon fell into the stereotype assigned to most of the wealthly elites attending an Oxbridge institution. Henry, for his part, was not interested in revisiting the turmoil of his childhood (excepting, of course, when he needed to gain a higher vote share from the working-class) and so did little to reign in his son. Indeed, when he graduated from Oxford in 2022, he expressed a contempt for the poorest in society, had a poor work-ethic and was certainly spoiled. After his graduation, George spent two years working for the Conservative Research Department (an organisation widely said to be responsible for rearing future leaders) and it was during this time that he met who would become his future wife, Sophie. She did not work at the same organisation as him, and was not involved in politics in the slightest. Working as a barwoman at a pub called 'The Golden Arms' she and George became involved in a one-night stand in 2024 that led to a longer-term relationship. Incidentally, Caelan would be born later that year and spur the two to marry. By the end of 2024, George was engaged to be married, a father, and tipped to soon become a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party (something he would achieve in 2025), and still felt no more matured than during his days at the Bullingdon Club of Oxford. This would have dire consequences for the family. When George finally joined his father in Parliament at the young age of 27 in 2025, he focused his mind on helping his father politically. In doing so, he could effectively remove himself from the worrying thoughts of how he would become a decent father, and a worthy husband. Burying himself in his work to aid his father, Henry had little complaints about the parenting skills of his son as his ambitions to build a political dynasty were increasingly realised. And now, finally, we come to the story of Caelan Emsworth.
[sub] Caelan [/sub]
Born on April 4th in the year 2025, the life Caelan was born into could not have been further away from what his grandfather, Henry, had known. By his fourth birthday, Caelan had visited over five countries (it was during a trip to South America when he was four that Caelan developed an early love for nature and wildlife), had nannies attending to his every need and fussing over him and was treated to every luxury and indulgence. There was, however, important difference between the two upbringings. Henry had a father who, at the very least, was constantly working to better the lives of his children. Instead, Caelan had George. Often absent and rarely truly involved in the early childhood of his son, George was instead working with his father (and younger brother when he earned a seat in Parliament in the year 2027) to achieve power. Their dream would be realised when, in 2031, Henry Elmsworth was elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in the General Election. It had taken Henry near seventy years, but he had finally reached the top, and what's more he had two sons as elected politicians to carry the family name. Caelan was only six, but was already becoming accustomed to life in politics. His father now held a senior cabinet post, and his grandfather was the Prime Minister of the country to which he belonged. Indeed, Caelan had no part to play in the story of the Emsworth dynasty. It had been built through the work of his grandfather, father and uncle. It was not to last. Henry's four years as Prime Minister (2031-2035) were marked by economical downturns, societal divisions, and a country that struggled to make its' mark on the international stage. Corporations, increasingly, held the influence and keys to the global economy, not governments. Henry was a capable politician, however, and was successfully able to maintaining his relatively high approval ratings (54%) with the aid of his charismatic son, George. There is something poetic to the rags-to-riches story, after all, and the public were always keen to hear it. Henry would eventually retire in 2035 at the age of 71, content with the goals he had reached. Now, he took a more active role with his grandchildren and family as they continued onward in their political careers. For Caelan, during this period, his life was uneventful, but pleasant. He longed for more attention from his father throughout, though eventually reached a resigned acceptance that politics dominated his fathers life, and as George had often implied to him on the few occassions he was available, would eventually dominate Caelan's life also. He attended the same primary and secondary schools as his father, and had always had a particularly close friendship with Aislin, who he met in primary school at the age of 7. When they turned 14, the two would begin dating. Indeed, Caelan's life continued as any might've expected it would. That was, however, until the Emsworth Election Scandal that would not only separate the Emsworth Clan, but change the course of Caelan's life forever. In 2041, the General Election was underway. George Emsworth, the newly-chosen charismatic leader of the Conservative Party looked to lead them to a victory as his father did. Indeed, all early polling indicated he would. Through a targetted scheme by Conservative-led councils, George had instructed the councils to introduce extra funding and benefit for marginal seats (areas where Conservative support was uncertain) in order to 'sway' the vote. This, in a nutshell, began the Emsworth Election Scandal. It began with an article in The Guardian, alleging that George Emsworth was effectively bribing voters, and was quickly picked up by the major news organisations. This, alone, may not have derailed the ambitions of George, but it was the stories that followed that quickly destroyed his clean, charismatic image. With the newspapers focusing on the story of George 'bribing' voters and suggesting he was in fact a behind-closed-doors sleaze, it was not long until the anonymous stories were submitted, and gained significant traction. Tales of cocaine-fueled parties, nepotism toward the Emsworth Clan and family friends, and ilicit affairs between George the Westminster staff led to his destruction. The public unanimously turned against him, recognising him as 'another Tory-stooge', and George would go on to lead his party to a disastrous election result. He was forced to resign - with his brother also losing his seat solely for carrying the Emsworth name, and was effectively shunned from politics. During this, Caelan was 16. He read the news with interest - and distressingly came across more than a few articles detailing the 'accidental' nature of his birth and subsequent marriage between his parents. Caelan, who had so rarely seen his father, became increasingly disgusted by the stories he read of his behaviour. It made sense - George had never had the opportunity to 'mature' or grow-up - but it was nontheless upsetting to come to understand your father through news articles, and not through actual interactions with him. The rest of the family distanced themselves from George - some of them, such as Uncle Harry, still had political ambitions, and they certainly weren't going to achieve those through associationg themselves with George - and Caelan found himself in the center of a scandal that shook his family to the core. His grandfather, Henry, in a particularly cold maneuvre turned his attention to his second-son, Harry, and distanced himself from George in an attempt to preserve his legacy. At his own school, even, Caelan had gone from being the son of a respected politician to the son of 'everything wrong with modern-day politics', and though was still accepted by his own friends, had to endure whispers against his family and the disdainful attitudes towards him from the parents of his schoolmates (who were often politicians themselves). Indeed, in a school filled with ambitious children who wanted to follow in the footsteps of their own parents, it wasn't long until some of his friends took longer to reply to texts and were suddenly often unavailable. Emsworth was a tainted name, and amongst the upper-classes, it's swim or sink. George, his wife and son, had sunk. Throughout this especially trying time, however, Caelan found the support of his longtime friend, and now girlfriend, Aislin. Despite protests from her own mother, a member of parliament for the Labour Party, she had refused to break off the relationship for the acts of Caelan's father. Together, Caelan knew the situation could not worsen. Naturally, he was not enthusiastic when he got the news from his father, George, that they were moving to America. In a long discussion with his wife and Caelan, George apologised for his absence, attempted to explain his actions and, ultimately, expressed a wish to reconcile. Sophie, eager to leave the past behind her, was only too keen to accept this. Caelan, however, was enraged. His father, not content with destroying the reputation of their family and isolating him at school, now wanted to remove him from the one person he actually cared about, and move him to an entirely new country. It was true, the Americans probably wouldn't think twice about the Emsworth name, but was it worth it? No - not in Caelan's mind. Unfortunately for him, however, he had no say. And so, in 2042, he was dragged to America with his mother and father. Arriving at their new home, Caelan was soon enrolled into the 2042-2043 school year at Bevery Hills High School. He'd heard stories of the school. After what he'd been through, it was the last place he wanted to be. Caelan wanted to be separate from the elite-class and wealthy, he wanted to be seen as his own person, as something more than the scandal of his surname. This was not the place to do that. It's going to be a hard year. Now finding himself in a country about which he knows little, surrounded by peers he almost certainly does not know, Caelan longs to return home and dissapear. If the 'Emsworth Scandal' has taught him one thing, it is that he wants no part in the sort of life led by his father. When he was asked by his new school, Beverly Hills High School, what his interests were and what electives he would be interested in, Caelan took the opportunity to pursue his childhood love for animals and the environment. Then - when he returns home, he can attend University with Aislin, and go on to work across the globe on a variety of research projects in the animal kingdom. All the while, he'll lead a happy, humble (and most importantly, invisible to the wider public), life with Aislin. That's the plan, anyway. But since when do plans ever work out?

[sub] FCs [/sub] [sub]Henry Emsworth - Christopher Plummer - grandfather[/sub] [sub]George Emsworth - Nikolaj Coster-Waldau - father[/sub] [sub]Sophie Emsworth - Carey Mulligan - mother[/sub] [sub]Harry Emsworth - Richard Armitage - uncle, brother of George[/sub]

A C A D E M I C S

[sub] E X T R A C U R R I C U L A R A C T I V I T I E S [/sub]
A member of the tennis club.
