Oh, and let me actually address the simulacrum question.  

I hadn't accounted for it, but it's been established that true, human-like intelligence in an AI is an emergent phenomenon.  It's not designed or created, but comes about "naturally" as a result of their ability to learn.  It takes about the same amount of time as a human for an AI to be fully "developed" and "mature," so around twenty years, give or take depending on the individual.  

An android pilot would never be made deliberately, but it's definitely feasible that a combat or security droid would outlive its original purpose and gain some level of independence and freedom.  The frontier is a wild place, anything can happen.
