Hazan Volintis

Race: Turian Sex: Male Age: 46 CE Profile: Infiltrator; tech and combat powers, two weapons. DOB: 2139 CE Homeworld: Palaven
Appearance: Hazan stands six feet straight, with a rather average build for a turian his age. His chitin is scratched and worn, especially across his face, with a very prominent scar running horizontally across the bridge of his nose and under both eyes. A second scar graces his chin, a small vertical scrape underneath his mouth. The colour of his chitin has not changed, but the stark white of his face paint has dulled slightly and become scraped and dinged from the battles he's fought. His armour is scratched, battle-worn. Dinged and scraped. His visor, similarly, is worn but still usable. His eyes are a stark, bright yellow that stands out from the rest of his colourations. He also wears a desert camouflage shemagh with his armour. When not on duty, he usually wears a slate grey hoodie with blue and white highlights, with the Initiative logo on the back, paired with a simple white t-shirt and grey jeans and shoes. He keeps his visor on at all times, mostly for convenience sake. Background: Born to a regular urban Turian family on Palaven, Hazan grew up like any other man of his race would. He spent his days in school, learning about the galaxy, the various races that made up the Council and the Alliance, along with other subjects like math and science. Inquisitive and curious for his age, Hazan displayed an aptitude early on for following instructions and improvising directions if he wasn't given any, along with displaying a near single-minded dedication to accomplishing tasks he was given. Chatty and friendly, the young turian was all set for his time in the military that came all too soon, leaving him to follow in the footsteps of his parents. They had become security specialists after their service, setting up their own company on the Citadel while they ran operations from Palaven, and although becoming a glorified security guard didn't sit well in his gut, he was young and impressionable. Something he took with him into the military. He enlisted in 2154 CE. All throughout basic, he got hazed (get it) for being scrawnier than the other recruits. This developed the normally talkative turian into a withdrawn, yet dedicated soldier as he spent his time honing what skills he could in the military. A knack for following and improvising directions turned into a talent for map-reading and navigating, and his single-minded dedication developed into one of the best marksmanship abilities within his company. The combination of talents made his commanders consider him for reconnaissance training, and the year of his graduation, his commanding officer came up to him with a proposition: to specialise and develop those innate talents into something solid. A scout and a marksman. A recon sniper. He readily accepted the challenge, thinking it'd be a good way to hone his skills even further and to push his capabilities to his limit. After all, becoming first a reconnaissance trooper and then a sniper was no easy feat. But he dedicated himself to his training. His map-reading talent expanded into analysing terrain and the stars of different systems, navigating land by moonlight, traversing jungles, forest, valleys and even urban battlefields, along with sketching and making maps from scratch and memory work, just by having been on the terrain for several days. Scout school drove him right into the ground and back out, covered in enough mapping and navigation experience to make the turian one of the best of his class. Hazan had just gotten back on terra firm of Palaven before the second phase of his training began: marksman academy. Hazan shipped off-world again and spent the majority of his academy training on different environments and planets, learning how to adjust to every land he was in, compensating for wind speeds, elevation, planet rotation and different forms of bullet drop from the various rifles he was equipped with. A lot easier on the body than scout school, but harder on the mind. Still, Hazan bit down and forged through mental tests of wind speeds on famous planets and locations, bullet speeds of different firearms and even the average bullet drop on certain planets. All this to prepare him for his final test, a combination of both schools of training: dropped on a planet he's never been on, forging his way through harsh terrain, analysing an enemy structure and eliminating a single high value target with one shot. All of which he accomplished without complaint. In 2161 CE, he graduated with full honours and became one of the turian military's many reconnaissance snipers in active service. The road was hard, rugged and destructive, but three years and two schools of training had honed Hazan into a fine-edged weapon, one that was being talent spotted by many regiments through the turian army and navy. One stuck out to him, though. The 132nd Light Patrol Squadron, a small battalion of ships and troops that patrolled the mass effect relays between the Terminus systems and Council space. For the men and women aboard the 132nd, this meant pirates, slavers and all manner of criminal known to border space. The 132nd took down these threats to the general peace and rescued whoever they could, to be returned to their families and home worlds in one piece. He signed on and the Squadron welcomed him warmly, assigning him as chief navigator aboard one of their small light vessels. His duty was simple: aboard the ship, to navigate the systems and chart their journeys to the various criminal hub worlds and highways that their targets sailed on. On the ground he was part of a seven man fire team assigned for target elimination and VIP extraction, often picked to carry out hostage rescue missions and running security for traders and cartographers. If they weren't in combat, the Squadron spent their time training on different worlds, charting them for turian records while also analysing their terrain and formulating different strategies for each. He spent the remainder of his service years with the 132nd, making lasting friendships and learning a lot about the galaxy and how it worked. All too quickly, 15 years passed. Hazan turned 30 in 2169 CE. He spent one last year in the 132nd, learning about the abject horror of Mindoir and being very angry about the whole situation without being able to help, before leaving. The last few years of pirate hunting and scouting new worlds had grown boring to him, and although the rest of his team didn't share the sentiment, he was the only one to harbour a very specific itch. The itch to travel, see more, and try his luck at doing things on the other side of the law. Bidding farewell to his shipmates and promising to see them again whenever their paths crossed again, he left and took a one way ticket to the only station where luck and skill with a gun meant everything: Omega. On the decrepit station, he made a name for himself as, first and foremost, a mercenary and an extremely proficient tracker and hunter of men. Taking the name of Ghost, he built his reputation amongst the local bounty hunting community by being one of the top baggers, getting his targets alive on more occasions than dead. His skill drew in the attention of bad people, namely the other mercenary groups on the station, and it wasn't long before his name appeared on the bounty boards. However, his penchant of bringing in live targets also brought the attention of the more generous mercenary teams and it wasn't long before he was found by a Quarian by the name of Valla T'Karrah vas Marrakech and his team, callsign Valiant. They boasted a rather impressive ratio of captures to kills and Hazan's rep and skill was something they needed more than the money on his head. The Valiants took contracts and hunted for money and reputation, mostly to line their own pockets, but also to fund their various little projects. One of which was a journey home, courtesy of a slightly older turian. A lady named Nemis Adreadan. Talking with Nemis during downtimes between contracts, he learned that they were about the same in terms of background. They were both born on Palaven and both had undergone scout school and graduated near the top of their class. But where Hazan had specialised even further, taking on marksman training and joining with a Navy regiment, Nemis had continued on with scout training and become a runner and cartographer, helping her regiment chart various regions of untraveled space, mapping out different star systems and the planets that comprised them. Eventually her service ended and she too, went to Omega to find her own fortune and freedom from restrictions and rules. She joined with Valla early on and was one of the founding members of fireteam Valiant. Rather surprised that she wasn't dating him, Hazan tried his luck and asked her out. To his surprise, she said yes. They began dating in earnest after their next mission and their relationship blossomed amongst the rust and gloom of Omega. It felt almost surreal, to have a love this pure amongst the shit stains of society crammed together into one station. The fact that other hunters hadn't gone for Hazan's bounty puzzled him, but it was a question he'd soon find an answer to. On another routine bounty hunt, they were made. A rival group of bounty hunters closed in on their location during the mission and aimed straight for Hazan's head. Without support, the Valiants were pushed into a corner and forced to surrender. However, a chance opened for them to escape, but a distraction had to be provided. Against his wishes, Nemis freed herself from her restraints, released the others covertly and made a break for an escape. The chance gave the Valiants the opening they needed to run for it, but Nemis was trapped with no chance of escape. Rather than get captured again, Nemis decided to sacrifice her life, creating an explosion that blocked off the rival team from reaching their escape vehicle. Hazan mourned his loss for days, with none of the team able to comfort him. Eventually, he decided to pack up and leave. He told Valla about his decision, who supported it fully, gathered whatever credits and equipment he had left, and booked the first transport off the station. But not before he paid off an info broker to scrub whatever records he had left in Omega before leaving. It was just before he left that he found the employment notice floating around the Intranet. A smuggler wanted a crew for his ship. No training required. Every good crew needed a navigator, so he signed up right away, mostly to escape his hunters but to find a new adventure to go on. He used all his savings to get himself one-way passage to Illium, where the ship was docked. With his new identity, he decided to let loose a little. Be less of the stoic, aloof sniper he once was. Thus was how he signed up to be the navigator for the Borealis. Captain Jerell Luzami, a salarian that had pulled the crew together, was found dead on the day they were scheduled to meet him and depart for further ventures. Each of the crew had been given a slice of the rusty, decrepit pie that was the Borealis, and they were all responsible for keeping it going. Grudgingly, Hazan accepted it. After all, they'd been unceremoniously told to shove off from the docks and had been left in space pondering their next move. The dead captain had some jobs in spare for them, as it turned out, so they took the chance. Pinned their hopes on a dream, so to speak. Surprisingly, the crew stuck together when he'd thought they'd dissolve and go their separate ways. Their first mission, however, involved a return to Omega, the station he'd swore to get away from. Cursing his bad luck, he returned to his former second home and thanked the Spirits when they finished the noisy and messy job and left with credits in hand and more than enough battle experience to go around. For five whole years, he fought alongside the Riggers, tirelessly accepting job after job after job just to pad his own wallet and to keep the ship afloat. The life didn't get worse, but it didn't get any better either. Arguments amongst the crew were common as time went by, and their numbers dwindled as people came and left, and eventually he was one of the last remaining crew aboard. The handful who remained made the decision to return to Illium, junk the ship for credits and go their separate ways. Hazan was one of them, and he fully intended to make use of the money he'd earned. By then, the year was 2183 CE. The news of Eden Prime being attacked sent his mind into a tizzy. The galaxy was going down the drain and he wanted an out for him and what remained of his family. It wasn't long before news trickled down the grapevine and he'd learned of the Andromeda Initiative. A way to make a new home in a new galaxy. What with the shitty life he'd had, he was looking forward to some change. With the Initiative in mind, he set forward his own game plan to get his life back on track. First stop: contacting his family. His parents aboard the Citadel were less than thrilled but still happy when their son finally contacted them, out of the blue after spending the last few years in the Borealis. He'd sent occasional emails and messages to them over the years, just to assure them that he was alive even though he was on the wrong side of the law. But when he contacted them by video, it was serious. He wanted to return home and to apply for the initiative, but there were things he had to settle first on Omega. Matters to set straight. He promised that he'd be home before the year's end, which they held him to. On Omega, he spent his time tracking down various bounty hunters, interrogating them mercilessly for information on the people who ran the bounty board service. Eventually he tracked them down to an old, bombed out apartment complex in the slums. With rifle and shotgun in hand, he stormed the building alone and came face to face with a startling revelation: the head of the bounty service was his old friend, Valla T'Karrah vas Marrakech, a Quarian mercenary he'd worked with several times before. It was he who ordered the hit that had screwed up his last job with Valla's crew and had cost the life of his then girlfriend, a fellow turian and scout school graduate Nemis Adreadan. Heartbroken, Hazan cornered Valla on the roof of the apartment building, even as it broke down from the gunfire and explosions that wrecked the bounty board's main servers. With no other alternative, Hazan shot his former best friend and killed him to forever wipe away his past as a criminal. He then left, dissolving his bounty hunter identity by faking his own death, and left a memorial for Nemis on the rooftop of her apartment. Surely his old Mantis rifle, disassembled into a picture frame, would suffice to keep his heart intact. Then he left Omega for the last time, not once looking back. He rejoined his family on the Citadel and took charge of their business, a private security firm that handled minor cases that C-Sec threw to them. Hazan and his family eventually all signed up to be on the Initiative, since the company needed security personnel badly. Fast forward six hundred years and their choice to sign on paid off when Hazan and his father were woken from cryo sleep to help deal with the fallout from the mutiny. While the tech heads patched up the Nexus, Hazan spent most of his time with an Avenger in his talons, keeping the dissenters from making noise by looking scary. Then the Hyperion came, and with it arrived a Pathfinder. Finally, perhaps they'd get the break they'd needed. But as the strain was too much to bear, Hazan's father volunteered to go back to his cryo pod, to lessen the weight on the Initiative's resources. The younger turian took it well enough, saddened by being alone again on the Nexus but knowing full well that he and his family were still alive, albeit asleep. Then came the rumbles down the grapevine of APEX. They needed good men and women for their field teams. Experienced in the fields of combat, scouting, terrain navigation. Military background highly sought after, with experience in field navigation and extraction valued. Hazan knew what he had to do. He put his name down for APEX and they accepted him with open arms and a gun in his. He had to do something other than stand guard all day. His legs itched to see the wide open spaces again, to run and to fight for his home. APEX did that for him. He only hoped the team he was in would feel the same way. Personality: No longer the naive young mercenary and assassin he once was, Hazan is a humble, down-to-earth soldier merely doing his duty. His loyalty used to lie with those who paid him enough, now they fall solely with the Initiative. He doesn't agree with some of their methods, but the protection of his home comes first. Hazan keeps his mouth shut and his thoughts to himself and his team, and is fiercely loyal to those who believe in him and count on him. If you've known him for long enough, he is a reliable ally with a sharp wit and a fierce streak. Outside of the job, Hazan is very approachable, often volunteering his ear or shoulder for others to lean on if they're feeling low. Years spent alone have developed a loner streak in the turian, and he spends most of his time off duty either drinking in the bar or walking the Nexus hallways, admiring the scenery of space and trying to keep his thoughts focused on the positives in his newfound life. He's taken up tinkering with firearms as a hobby, along with the more peaceful hobby of writing a diary that he keeps stored in his personal datapad that he carries with him at all times. Reason for being awoken from cryo (Specific jobs, skills, and Initiative Application): Like most security-type personnel, Hazan was awoken from cryo to help deal with the mutiny, though it was already over. His job laid in crisis management and security after the dissidents were exiled from the station. After that was over and done with, Hazan was shifted from crisis management to station security.
