If this really does have the survival elements and resource gathering implied, I think I'd enjoy it a lot.

I'm thinking of an "alchemist" type character who makes a point of using materials gathered from creatures to justify their thirst for the hunt. Doesn't necessarily have to be magical uses for the materials...it could be...but it could be as simple as snake-oil (made up applications), jewelry, and leather. Would that fly?
