The first trial site came into view. Liam told his party that according to Principal Oak, during the trial battles, you were not permitted to catch Pokémon. When Liam approached it, a giant, slender Pokémon leapt out to attack him. a few smaller Pokémon popped out with it.

"[i]Gumshoos, the Stakeout Pokémon. Although it wasn’t originally found in Alola, this Pokémon was brought over a long time ago when there was a huge Rattata outbreak. When it finds a trace of its prey, it patiently stakes out the location...but it’s always snoozing by nightfall.

Yungoos, the Loitering Pokémon, and the preevolved form of Gumshoos. Its stomach takes up most of its long torso. It’s a big eater, so the amount Trainers have to spend on its food is no laughing matter. Although it will eat anything, it prefers fresh living things, so it marches down streets in search of prey.[/i]" There was a strange aura around the Gumshoos. 
 "So, this must be one of those Totem Pokémon that I've heard about." Liam thought aloud.
 "Alright; Robin, Jangmo-o! It's time to shine!" Liam sent his two Pokémon out and the battle began. Both charged in and tried to bite Jangmo-o. Robin made a gust of wind, pushing Yngoose away from Jangmo-o. Jangmo-o used Dragon Dance to increase his atack and speed. Both Yungoos and Totem Gumshooes tried to use Super Fang, the former on Jangmo-o and the later on Jangmo-o. Jangmo-o counterd with Dragon Tail and knocked the Totem away. Robin was hit and countered with Leafage. The Yungoos was starting to get tired, but they both used Hyper Fang, but swapped targets from last round. Robin was KO'd and Jangmo-o was hit, but survived. Upset, he used his newly learned Dragon Claw with such strength that he knocked the Totem onto the Yungoos. The attack KO'd Totem Gumshooes and the Yungooes was KO'd by the Totem falling on it. The Totem Gumshooes stood back up and looked at Liam sternly for a brief moment before conceding. A Yungoos ran up and handed a Normalium Z to the Totem to hand off to Liam. Liam thanked the two and offered them each an Orren Berry since they were about to battle again.
