Larry Trainor Alias: Negative Man Age: 33 Personality: Hopeful, Brave, Astute, Militarist, Self-Destructive Archetype: Metahuman Powers: The Negative Spirit – Larry’s physiology has been altered to a plasma-like, radioactive state. His density can be freely changed, and he can discharge blasts of negative energy. There is a finite amount of this energy, but he retains control of each atom that comprises it. The Mechanical Vessel - To minimize the poisonous side effect of his powers, an android containment suit was created for him to inhabit and control known as unit K. Bravo. The suit is highly customizable such that Larry can have different appearances if needed. The energy needed to power this machine is bound to the unique signature of Negative Man’s radiation, making it useless for others to utilize. Son of the Skies – While his body is gone, lieutenant commander Trainor’s mind remains. His piloting skills and commando training are still assets that he boasts over most, even while some of his teammates can fly without the need of machines. Weaknesses: Background Radiation - The nature of Negative Man’s powers is inherently dangerous to individuals around him if left unchecked, forcing him to not utilize his full potential. Even with that in mind, compromising his containment suit would effectively remove him from a fight unless the stakes are too high to ignore. Memoryleaks – Something lurks in the back of Negative Man’s mind. A feeling of dread and loss. Is there something he hasn’t noticed since the accident that gave him his powers? Is he still really Larry Trainor if the flesh that was given that name all burnt to ash? Or could there be conspiracies that he cannot comprehend even as an elemental? This plague of the mind haunts him, complementing his potential nuclear instability with a fragile psyche. Bravo]
Character Evolution: Let’s explore universality with this interpretation of Negative Man with regards to the last iteration of Polarity Man. This character is basically Larry retaining most of his personality before the accident instead of becoming a cold, non-killing machine. Now, he’s going to be a fiery, non-killing machine that must balance the duties he has as a soldier and superhero.I hope to still play out the theme of identity and change with this character, with the ideas of what a hero should be while also upholding the laws we find in our society. Also, I hope that the Blue Beetle/Question/Polarity Man dynamic stays with these new interpretations. Altered History: A day before the fateful test flight that would have placed Lieutenant Trainor in the Doom Patroller jet, a surprise attack orchestrated by the mysterious General Immortus occurred on the airbase where Polarity Man was created. The assaulting forces began sieging the base, but the defending soldiers refused to lose an inch of ground to the enemy. Unbeknownst to most on the base, this attack was merely a diversion for the shapeshifting Madame Rouge to sneak in and make off with the jet herself. The only person to notice this attempted theft was the individual she stole the identity of: our destiny bound airman, Lt. Larry. As the lieutenant confronted the French thief, a fight between them would soon break out. At this point in time, the very normal and un-superpowered Larry Trainor was beaten down quickly but not before he managed to place a grenade inside the plane’s cockpit. The explosion would trigger a chain reaction, causing the same events that lead to him becoming Polarity Man, except this time our brave hero willingly made the decision to stop evil with his sacrifice. Recommended Background Leaguer: Cliff Baker as Animal Man BRIEF Bio: Lieutenant Larry Trainor was a USAF special operations agent who happened to die for his country. Yet, his spirit lives on in a literal sense as his consciousness began to manifest as the hero known as Negative Man. After the attack on the airbase he was stationed in, spikes in an unknown radiation would occur at random times throughout the days that follow. Determined to figure out the cause, the base’s research department managed to track the largest concentration of the energy and contain it in a vacuum-sealed chamber. A few days later, the energy took the a more human figure and spoke: “It burns!” exclaimed the energy before settling down. Tests were ran and stabilizing agents were administered until they could make heads of what they had captured. As months passed, the scientists began getting sick. A new batch of eggheads was brought in to replace the old one and the first thing they did was to create an even stronger container that could block out the radiation. This was android K. Alpha. After a year of this impromptu project, the Negative Man was introduced as the military’s sponsored hero for the Justice League. The story of a brave soldier whose relentless spirit came back to fight for America was quickly sold to the press, and the newly promoted Lieutenant Commander Larry Trainor found himself amongst the ranks of gods. Notes: The android suit is based off the same technology that Robotman used. Unless there’s already a plan for him, Buddy Baker should have been Animal Man before Cliff but is now MIA. Sample Post: If he still had skin, Negative Man would have woken up in cold sweat. As he began to regain consciousness, the first thing Larry did was clutch his side. “Argh. Feels like I’ve been stabbed… Phantom pain from the explosion. Must be it.” Indeed, while it has been some time now that he has been Negative Man, the fires of his creation still burn from time to time. This was no time to sit idle though as he realized that he was in middle of the Metro Tower's lobby. In a panic, he searched for his containment suit in order to stop the spread of his radiation, but it soon became clear that no one else was in his immediate vicinity. Windows that were suppose to let in sunlight were suddenly pitch black. This was troubling. “Calm. Must stay calm to keep power down.” He uttered to himself before finding his suit across the hall, lying on the ground. Like a ghost possessing a body, Negative Man entered the shell and the android’s eyes soon changed color into that of a bright yellow. The red accents of his suit brightened up as well, causing him to pause briefly and admire the wonders of his surrogate. With his immediate drawback in check, Larry proceeded to his quarters via elevator. While it seemed like an eternity, it was a nice ride considering there were no interruptions along the way unlike every other day. Reaching his destination, the Negative Man peered on both sides before exiting the elevator. No one could be found. Silently, he walked towards his room. Why a machine and an energy elemental need a bed is anyone’s guess but underneath it was an emergency radio that was wired to his superiors in the military. “Come in, Langley. Metro Tower might be compromised. Send ground forces to quarantine in event of disaster.” Static was the only response he had. The lieutenant commander could only hope that his message had reached the right ears.
