After all, his father was a diplomat from the imperial courts of the Kaiserreich. However, the new post assigned to the elder Schmidt would bring his family across the Atlantic to be observers of warfare at a scale never seen before: The American Civil War. Modern warfare was rapidly changing and powers of equal technological strength had not fought each other before, making this a great learning opportunity. While the fighting was contained to the Americas, the great nations of the Old World all had a stake in the conflict and were ready to answer the call to arms if any of the others intervened. Fortunately, that never happened and peace in Europe would prevail. Unfortunately, Heartless began to pop up on the battlefields where hundreds of Americans lay dead. Panic swept across the world as fast as news could spread and soon no one was able to leave the cursed lands as naval blockades forced American ships to return to their ports. Unable to return back to Europe, the Schmidts reluctantly embraced the American way of life, changing their names to fit in with the locals as they settled in the 2nd Texas Republic. Now a bit older, Lucas had become a lawman and the apprentice of local tinkerer Rodrigo Vivar, who specialized in the applications of a newly discovered ore known as Ghostrock. Highly combustible and unnaturally durable, the mineral yielded an energy output that enabled innovators such as Vivar to make their wildest dreams into reality. However, outlaws would hear of his collection of machines and they promptly staged a heist at the inventor's home. As fate would have it, Lucas was at Vivar's for matters of scholarly pursuit. He made a great argument for gunmanship as an art that night as he successfully dispatched most of the assailants by himself. Yet, a lone rider managed to escape with one of Vivar's inventions. Not wanting to leave matters unfinished, Lucas took his steed and pursued the runaway, determined to stop him. However, in his haste, he realized that he no longer had any bullets on him while riding at peak mare speed. As Lucas gained on his target, the bandit read through his poker face and answered his gambit. No longer burdened in trying to outmaneuver an ammo-less gunslinger, the distance between two started to become wider by the second. Lucas knew what he had to do and took a leap of fate while he still could reach the outlaw. He overshot his target and landed in front of the bandit's horse. The startled beast neighed, coming to a screeching halt and propelled its rider against a barbed fence, but trampled all over Lucas' right arm as well. The pursuit was over yet the cost is still being paid by the deputy to this day. While in older days this would have crippled Lucas for life, the miracles of modern machinery had negated his dash with the devil. Tinkerer Vivar, grateful for the effort, set out on creating a device that would not only rehabilitate Lucas' arm but also increase his strength. The end result was the Ghostrock Gauntlet, a device forged from its namesake but also had a chunk of unrefined ore powering it. This contraption became Lucas' most distinguishable feature, and attracted the attention it deserved from anyone wanting to claim it as their own. Yet, perhaps no one could have foreseen the Heartless themselves increasing their attraction to the deputy. These mindless creatures pursued him across the wildlands, razing settlements along the way. It was clear he needed to escape civilization in order to prevent these monsters from hurting others. Days would soon turn into weeks as he lived in isolation, ever traveling the west as the dark tide threatened to consume him. In his darkest hour at the desolate wastes, an unlikely weapon manifested itself in front of him. Its shape was of home, unmistakably his. Perhaps now he wielded the literal key to his freedom. With an iron horse he salvaged as his steed, his father's pickelhaube protecting his dome, a mechanical marvel for an arm, and the keyblade he dubbed Gloria, Lucas now hopes to bring order to the wild west and beyond. Age: 26 Skills: Being a Texan lawman brings a tough gunfighter reputation along with it, and Lucas lives up to that expectation. Being adept at quickdrawing and sharpshooting, he stands out as a bright prospect for justice. However, aside from knowledge on how to wield a revolver and a repeater rifle, he also knows a thing or two about basic engineering. After all, he needs to know how to fix his mechanical horse when it goes on the fritz. His Ghostrock gauntlet allows him to pack a punch with the strength of at least ten men and can spew fire or steam if needed. Utilizing this has lead to him developing a mean southpaw boxing style. His upbringing in high society has also granted him some working knowledge of the languages spoken in high courts, mainly French, Russian, German, and Latin. Lastly, he can play some piano tunes but do not expect him to sing along. Personality: His Prussian heritage meant that Lucas’ upbringing was held to the disciplinarian standards expected of the time. As such, he respects authority and has no qualms in delivering punishment that others might find excessive. However, he is also naturally curious and yearns to learn more about the world around him. So while he has a strong authoritarian foundation of beliefs, Lucas is also open to listen to the opinions of others. Styling himself as a modern noble Hussar, his main pursuit is that of glory by bringing order to a lawless wasteland. With his efforts, justice will prevail. World Sheet Name: The Dark West Summary of History: During the latter half of the 19th century, a new sparkling-blue ore was discovered in the western territories of America that soon eclipsed coal’s usage as the staple energy source with its hotter and seemingly everlasting combustion. The ore, dubbed by miners as Ghostrock due to its haunting glow when burnt, enabled the region to thrive and soon the question of the resource’s ownership led to friction between the Federal and local government. The United States of America would then see a civil war that fractured the once great nation to numerous splinter factions. But during the height of the conflict, a Ghostrock-fueled ritual headed by Sioux shamans designed to quell the war brought about an unending tide of Heartless and covered the continent with a dark fog. With the influx of shrouded creatures roaming the lands, the civil war would soon come to an uneasy ceasefire. The American economy would soon dwindle as their trade ships began getting turned away from old world ports, with the fear of bringing Heartless aboard their vessels being as rampant as the actual infestation itself. Years would pass, but a bright light of hope continued to shine under the shroud of darkness. The isolation would soon bring about odd technological innovations for the Americas as their continued usage of Ghostrock would lead to steam powered machinations such as iron horses, steam lifted airships, and rail-based landships. More importantly, they discovered that the ever-burning bullets refined out of the ore could harm the shadows that haunted their lands. It was time to bring back the light of liberty to the New World.
