The Midwestern United States doesn't have much for mountains- the Appalachians in the east and the Rocky Mountains in the west are your best for an American Mountain system. Wyoming is going to be the closest to the Midwest, and I've personally spent some time training in Guernsey, which is mountainous and has lakes, and was only a 10-ish hour drive.

Otherwise, Idaho and Colorado have good mountain systems too.
