Sierra Tikaavik
Sierra had no words. She was entirely overwhelmed. She'd been hiding in the forest just outside the city walls for days working up the courage to approach it, and she still didn't know what to do. The stone wall that stood before her reached higher than she thought possible. How on earth could anyone stack stones so high? She could feel its weight on her shoulders, not unlike the feeling one gets when creeping through mountain paths. Like stone giants leaning over you, watching. She wasn't even sure that she was in the right place. She'd barely been able to read the letter, and the coordinates it gave meant nothing to her. But somehow she knew it must be. Something drew her there, calling her from behind those damn walls. The whole area felt strange. Charged, somehow. Strange scents wafted out over the walls, scents of creatures she couldn't even begin to discern. The weirdness of it all should have sent her running. But it didn't. So today, finally, Sierra told herself she would go inside. She had to. As unprepared as she felt to do something so bold without guidance, she knew she had to. She'd made it this far! She had to see what she'd come so far for! So move your damn legs already! Huffing, she kicked the dirt with a bare foot. Circling in place, she inwardly cursed herself for her cowardice. Typical, she thought, you knew you wouldn't have the guts to do it. A growl formed in her throat, mostly aimed at herself. Finally, she turned her thoughts to the letter once again. What it said about the Children of the Dusk finally having a haven where they didn't have to hide. She had never felt the need to show herself before the letter; now it was all she could think about to learn about the other people in the world. The thought gave her an odd boost of confidence. With a deep breath, she shouldered her bag and willed herself forward. One foot, then the other. Soon, she was in. If she'd been overwhelmed outside the wall, she was entirely dumbfounded inside. The sights, sounds, and smells assaulted her senses, and she found herself happy that she'd transformed to her human shape before coming in. Even in this form her senses were keener than a human's, but lacked the precision of a wolf's. For now, that was fine with her. She didn't know what to look at. All around her were people, people of foreign shapes and sizes, smelling like nothing she'd ever experienced before. Her feet moved on their own, through the passerby and toward a colourful throughfare where people seemed to be collecting. She'd never seen so many people in her life, and part of her wanted to shrink away. The other part, however, pulled her forward. It was all so foreign, but something strangely familiar nagged at the back of her mind. Amber eyes wide, she stared at the city around her, turning around as she walked. Every time she turned there was something else entirely new. Creatures in stalls selling things, some more human than others; people brushing past her briskly, grumbling for her to keep up with traffic; even a group of giggling children rushing past her legs, one with green skin. Some people looked human, some did not. Many had the features of humans and other creatures. Others still looked as human as she did. Struggling to take it all in, Sierra didn't watch where she was going. Absently, she backed up to get a better view of a stall's colourful canopy, and ran right into someone. As soon as she touched the person, Sierra jumped, turning on her heel and dropping her bag in the process. "Fuck!" she exclaimed, stooping to collect the bag, "I'm so sorry! I didn't see you!"
[@Prosaic]
