The spell relies on the value of the onyx and I don't think gem dust is going to be worth anything as opposed to a finely cut stone, except to other necromancers. It'd also be a lot more suspicious if someone found out you were carrying around onyx dust.

Correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I'm aware, a familiar has to be an animal. But a familiar not fitting with necromantic aesthetic is totally fine, you wanna be a lowkey necro anyway, right?
