Some perceive this as a way of reminding others of his roots – a respected member of John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore –  and that he was less than enthused about making the move out to the west coast to take his current position; a grudge he still holds several years later. Of course, there are also rumors running rampant among certain circles of Tom’s illicit activity with women, particularly when he was younger. While Beth is oblivious, their eldest daughter seems to suspect that an affair is/was the true cause of the lull in their marriage.
