Patrol cars were beginning to move through the streets below with increasing regularity and already she’d spotted several skimmers buzzing through the neighbourhood. Pulling her jacket a little tighter around herself, her hand dropping to rest on the gym bag at her side, the young jacker shivered in the cold night air. The wait was taking too long and she was beginning to wonder whether her mystery buyer was even going to show up. Her attention was piqued as she heard footsteps in the courtyard below, echoing loudly around the high walls surrounding the little private space hidden away amongst the aging architecture. Shuffling forwards anxiously she peeked over the edge of the roof, hoping to see whoever it was she was hear to meet waiting for her. Instead all she saw were two young lovers, their hands quickly stripping off each other’s clothing just enough to get to the exciting parts hidden beneath. For a moment Susie felt happy for them, it had even a while since she’d indulged her carnal desires other than with something that ran on batteries, but as she watched them the lonely melancholy she lived so flamboyantly to avoid came rushing back. Pushing herself back onto her ledge Susie hugged herself tightly on the cold, grimy rooftop. It was getting late, but she really didn’t have anywhere better to be, or anyone to be there with. Her chin sunk down onto her chest as she began to think a little too hard about her life, and after a few moments she felt a drop of moisture running down her cheek. The chill of the teardrop was enough to break the young girl out of her reverie, and quickly flicking it away she pulled up her sleeve and quickly accessed the public feeds. Scanning the tides of inane chatter for a few moments she tried to pick out anything directed her way, but apart from a few random party invites and corny pick-up lines from strangers who’d seen her profile online somewhere there was nothing. Agitated she quickly dropped a new message into the sea, hoping her customer would find her message in a bottle before she wasted too much more of her valuable time. Somewhere out there a data terminal waited, and right now Susie really needed the guidance of Eva to help her find her way.
