Brinn will definitely get along with my own character, he's also an adolescent half-elf with a more companionable personality. (I should get his app up by the end of the week at most.) 

To weigh in on the "jobs," I interpreted it as for any role someone would reasonably serve on a ship, and that on its own gives some insights on where a character's talents are.
