Nothigness or uncertanity protects you by your nature. When people only know that you sorta...should...kind....be...here...somewhere...you are undefined and your nature with reality basically bullshits you out of the way. Sort of like a quantum state. As long as no one is looking at you...you're sort of nothing. Contradictively.

Inverse applies when you're defined. When they sense you or see you. They use the same bullshit wishy washyness to hit you. You ARE around there...somewhere...roughly...but as long as no one can confirm it. You can't be hit.
