A human life is nowhere near the cause of a damaged hull. The ship would evacuate as the guy left wheels the ship, most times he would jump out and swim underwater so the enemy cannot see him. It was a protocol in which the crew that jumped out would sneak into the enemy ship and kill all of them. (Or get to a nearby island get help, go back and kill everyone.) It was classified as frigate by England but it was never a frigate (paperwork), since it was a pirate ship nobody was around to as record it, when seen it was referred to as a frigate and you don't really care if your ship is a galleon or a frigate unless doing something releated which requires the ship's category for that of either galleon or frigate.
