Given nobility and royalty would generally be leading the army itself, it would not be a surprise for the two to recognize one another, even if they never interacted directly. The sort of thing where both parties have seen and know the other, but not in person. 

Lord Beaduric would be fairly notable as well, some old knight who never saw much of the cbat itself outside of dealing with the opposing knighthood, even then not much of a hero himself. A red dragon among the army? Pretty easily recalled, especially if he was being provided with orders.
