Rags' guard was up. Hopefully they weren't there to bully her. When Rags turned, she suddenly found half a loaf of bread stuffed into her mouth, which, in her confusion, she let sticking out for a while as she stared down at it in surprise. This certainly wasn't a natural or expected turn of events. But this was bread. And bread was food, and she should be thankful for food and accept gifts. Rags started to chew on the bread, and her mood improved. When Aya started talking, Rags listened, and continued to chew. "Brain says they not down. Smell says they down," Rags replied, showing that while she didn't have a full grasp of English and didn't understand every word that was said to her, she understood enough to get the gist of what Aya was asking her, and replying in kind. "But if down not safe, why adults down?" The most unusual thing about Rags, once you got to know her, was her intelligence. She might actually be among the smartest and most inquisitive girls her age at the orphanage. She had a keen mind for reasoning and philosophy, as well as a large base of useful knowledge and wisdom that she had picked up from living in the wild, that came in handy during practice delves.
