There's no way I'm letting the Vongola take this life away from me again!" // A G E
17
// P E R S O N A L I T Y
To most, Ienari Sawada is a your everyday student who does his best to get along well with others, participates in events, and does well in his studies. He's a very live and let live person with a good balance between intro- and extraversion. He speaks politely and is usually willing to volunteer his time, but often complains about troublesome work and can be a bit harsh at times. Overall, his reputation for competence and reliability is well deserved, and he seems to possess the qualities of a generally good and inoffensive person--save for his laissez-faire attitude and his prickly, offhand manner towards those that bother him. But although he is well known, it is only long after the fact that one realizes they don't actually know anything about him. In that respect, he is an archetypal everyone's friend--the one everyone knows of, but few truly know. Regardless of how amiable he would seem, his superficial socialization only serves to establish a fundamental divide between himself and others. And that's exactly how he wants it. Underneath the pleasantries and lackadaisy, Ienari is a canny and cognizant young man. He enforces distance deliberately and often conceals his emotions. Almost every aspect of his student life is intended to preserve the peaceful status quo of daily life, and from that, ensure his ability to live his ideal life without worry. It's an undeniably selfish motivation, but not one fueled by malice; rather, it stems from a desire to protect others. Despite having the weakest claim to the title of Vongola XII, he is well aware that he's a potential threat to the others' primacy, and thus a target. Because he cannot completely abandon the mafia world, he has taken it upon himself to make sure that he's the only one around with his foot in it by refusing to cultivate deep relationships with his peers. However, despite his best attempts, Ienari cannot separate himself from others. Indeed, he's such a masterful liar that he can even lie to himself. While he rarely states his true thoughts, his actions make them painfully obvious. He cares about and craves closeness with others. He even has a few people he could call his friends--even if he makes a point of rarely if ever calling them the "f-word". He's even so soft-hearted and protective that he feels the need to take on extra burdens so everyone around him can live happily and fearlessly. Indeed, there's no denying the fundamental contradiction between what he wants and what he thinks he wants, but it's something that he brushes off as being okay as long as he doesn't make a habit of it and nothing bad has happened. Of course, these are all symptomatic of the truth: Ienari is someone who is always running. Fear is what lies at the heart of Ienari's being. It's the fear of loss in particular which has been literally carved into him. Not simply loss as death, but abandonment, denial, and many of its other forms. Though he's slow to trust, he's easily attached, and his sentimentality paves wave for vindictiveness against those who'd target those that are his. He may seem optimistic, but he's actually a realist--maybe even a pessimist--at heart. He doesn't really believe half the things he says, but shamelessly and desperately hopes they can come true. Likewise, his fearful nature and sharp mind often make him think and overthink his actions, and because he doesn't trust his instincts enough, he has a bad habit of either trying to undo his mistakes or observing indecisively. However, if someone he cares about were to ask him directly, he probably wouldn't allow himself to let them down. Ienari likes slice of life manga, the warmth of a kotatsu and pure dreams that can't possibly come true. He dislikes classical music, family reunions and alcohol (because he's a lightweight). His hobbies are photography and meddling in student affairs. Worth noting is that he has a habit of touching his side when he's anxious.
// B A C K G R O U N D
Ienari Sawada is the second son of Shigeru Sawada and Tomoko Mochida, and one of the nephews of the current reigning Vongola Boss, Iesada Sawada. Of the seven claimants to the title of Vongola XII, he is widely considered to be the weakest and least likely to be granted the title as a result of his upbringing and lack of aptitude. He himself takes no issue with this assessment, and embraces the degree of freedom from the politics of his bloodline it has allotted him. However, regardless of his distance to the title, his birthright has been both a boon and a bane throughout his life. Born in Italy under the care of Vongola medical staff and raised within the Italian headquarters of the Vongola Famiglia for seven years, it was obvious from the start that there was no avoiding the influence of the mafia in Ienari's life. For his own protection, his heritage was never meant to be kept a secret from him, and by the time his little sister was born, his status as a mafiosi was already firmly ingrained within. Despite this, Ienari's mother wanted her two youngest children to live out the normal life that she believed her eldest was unfairly deprived of. This was a decision she could not be swayed from, and out of concern for their well-being, Ienari's father had them move to the best place he knew: his hometown of Namimori, Japan. In Namimori, they were far from any immediate danger posed to the Famiglia and close to their forces if the need arose. Thus, it was the ideal place to raise two potential Vongola Bosses. Under the guise of a wealthy international businessman's family, Ienari, his mother and his little sister Shinako were able to grasp some semblance of normalcy in their daily life. Unfortunately, his father and brother would be unable to live alongside them due to their prior commitments to their respective organizations. Their visits were welcome but infrequent, and Ienari was raised largely by his mother as a result. Seasons not spent in school often saw him going to Italy for a few weeks, but apart from that his life was as normal as could be for someone with his cover. That life changed when he was thirteen. It was a Saturday just like any other. He was out with his mother and eight year old sister, heading home for the afternoon after getting groceries for the following week. Watched over by their usual retinue of bodyguards, they should have been as safe as ever as they walked along the well-worn sidewalk like they had for years. The last thing he remembered doing was getting mad at Shinako over something stupid and saying something mean that he didn't really mean, all while their mom tried her to stop their bickering. The rest of his memories are a chaotic blur of sensation. What he remembers was the white-hot pain of flame burning through his side and his sister's screaming, the scent of blistering flesh and the sounds of battle, and desperately clinging to life and consciousness as he lay powerless to assist his mother as she fought. He doesn't remember anything else. Ienari woke up three weeks later in the intensive care ward of the Namimori Vongola HQ, the sole survivor of the assassination attempt that claimed the lives of ten bodyguards, his mother, and his sister. The incident had been written off as a natural gas explosion in the public record, and repairs to the site were well underway by the time he awoke. Even the funeral had been held already, which Munetake told him had been as stiff as any mafia funeral could be. Three days after his awakening, Ienari was brought to Italy, unable to return to the life he'd been living up until then. To his peers and teachers, he was simply moving overseas to be with his father--not an incorrect statement, but not the whole truth. He was being brought straight to the Vongola's main headquarters in Italy, where he could be closely monitored and protected by the full-force of the Vongola Famiglia and their resources. It was there he spent the rest of his middle school, only returning to Namimori two months into the start of his first year of high school, the same but clearly changed by his experience. Currently, Ienari is in his second year of high school at Namimori High, and occupies the seat of General Affairs Manager on the student council, a job which he takes more seriously than his actual studies--if only because the penalty for shirking his duties is a lot more trouble than a few grade points. To his credit, he's maintained a good, though not exemplary, grade point average despite his aversion to hard work, and rarely arrives late to class. He may not be an expert staff fighter, but his ability to regulate, direct and shape his flames is noted as being the only exceptional thing about him. When used in tandem with his natural guile, he can mitigate, however slightly, the gap between skill, experience and power that exists between him and his opponents without resorting to resources like the Dying Will Bullet. That said, Ienari's flame control is still undeniably an imperfect asset, and his trickery can only do so much against truly capable opponents.
// E Q U I P M E N T
Shakujo - Also known by the much more annoying name of khakkhara, the shakujo is a staff-type weapon employed historically by Buddhist monks. Its most distinct feature is the loop of metal rings at head of the shaft, used to warn others of the presence of its wielder--a terrible thing for someone who'd rather avoid trouble. Ienari's shakujo has four rings, which is something of a joke on the part of the one who trained him considering that a four ringed shakujo is typically carried by novice monks. Ring - Sky Flame, Rank C. As he doesn't possess a Box Weapon, the ring is typically employed to produce the Sky Flames that are used to wreath his shakujo and accomplish other similar effects, but since Ienari hasn't participated in combat requiring it, he usually keeps it on a chain around his neck rather than around his finger. It has a Mammon Cover implemented to ensure that his presence is concealed against Dying Will Flame detection devices.
