[@ShwiggityShwah]I imagine like Locke your character will have been on the Ark for a a while, to get used to it. Locke has been on it for as long as it has been habitable, familiarising himself with it and it's crew, and even was a large part in the selection of many of the important people aboard, probably picked your char for the ship.
