[*] Icy - Karl is cold, distant, not overly friendly with others, and tends to curse. This sprouts from the high casualty rates of the 22nd and his life experiences. He believes that making friends with others would only make things harder to deal with when they die. Though, once you break through the cold exterior, he dearly values his comrades and would be willing to put his life on the line for them.
[*] Faithful - Karl has always been raised to love the Emperor above all else. Always have faith that the Emperor will protect and give guidance kind of thing. He has slightly more faith in the Emperor than the average guardsman and the return of a primarch only strengthened his faith.
[*] Dependable - Karl can stand on his own, him being one of the very few surviving members of the 22nd is proof of that. When given a task, he will do his fullest to complete the task and provide results.

[*] Iothea wasn't always a planet in constant and unforgiving war where you learned how to use a gun before you could even learn how to write your damned name. Half a millenia ago, you woundn't even think that a mining planet would be a war torn Death world for over 450 terran years. Combat with rebels and cultists in cramped urban locations underground was absolutely brutal and unforgiving. Though this made Karl the man who he is today. He earned his way to a spot in recruitment lottery through unwavering perseverance and complete faith. The lottery would choose who among the planet's elite combatants were worthy of serving the God Emperor outside of Iothea. Through the Emperor's grace, Karl was one of the lucky five thousand chosen to form the 22nd.

[*] The battle for Yairus Prime would be the downfall of the 22nd. The battle for the forgeworld raged between imperial forces and an Ork WAAAGH led by Warboss Agbar Headstompa. It took the sacrifice of 97% of the 22nd and countless other sacrifices for imperial forces to finally bring down the Warboss. It was a phyrric victory. The imperial forces had managed to secure the planet and kill Warboss Agbar Headstompa and stop the WAAAGH, but at a heavy cost of over 120,000 lives and two thousand of vehicles.
