That sinking feeling of regret and sadness that can sneak up on you when you’re already feeling pretty shitty and you’ve had enough alcohol to make an elephant tipsy. Ophelia had left, Cassie couldn’t quite remember where she’d gone, and Cassie had been left to her own thoughts, and after snagging a bottle of vodka, she’d taken to wandering. Cassie Clark had found her refuge tonight on a secluded area of the ship. The party was in full swing, yet over here, the music was a muffled as it could be, and the partygoers were few and far between. She sat near the edge of the boat, her feet dangling off the edge, swinging as the ocean spray speckled her legs. Her heels rested on one side of her, a bottle of Smirnoff on the other. She looked out over the waves, and took a swig from the bottle, wincing as it passed down her throat. Noah Nichols was looking to be anywhere but this boat, but unfortunately, that wasn’t possible. He’d settled for wandering around, trying to find a secluded area, when he stumbled upon Cassie Clark, mid swig. He froze, and was about to turn back when she turned, her eyes locking with his. Noah knew who Cassie was, everyone did, but he was damn sure she had no idea who he was, and having a stranger interrupt your binge drinking session couldn’t be anyone’s idea of a good time. “Well well well! Welcome to the pity party,” Cassie said, sighing and offering Noah a sad smile. He stammered, not knowing quite what to say. “Come on kid, take a seat,” she said, grinning and moving her shoes aside, her eyes half closed thanks to the copious amounts of alcohol in her system. Noah,, lacking any reason not to take a seat, nervously shuffled over, sitting down next to the clearly drunk girl. “I’m Cassie. But you probably knew that already. Everyone knows who I am. But nobody really does. Isn’t that funny? Funny, funny, funny.” Noah looked at the girl in amazement. He had no clue what to do here. He’d never been around a drunk person, hell, he’d never even been drunk himself. He was out of his element. Was it too late to leave? Just as he was pondering this question, Cassie pushed the bottle of Smirnoff into his arms, and gestured to his mouth. “Drink, kid. I’m not gonna be the only pathetic one here,” she said, fixing him with an expectant stare. Noah looked down at the open bottle, chewing his lip nervously. Finally, he brought it to his lips, letting the liquor flow into his mouth. He swallowed the vodka, and retched for a moment, coughing and threatening to send it all back up. After he’d calmed down, Cassie offered him a pat on the back. “First time? Don’t worry, it gets easier. Promise,” Cassie assured him. Noah turned to her, a look of disgust on his face. “People drink that garbage?” he asked, shocked. Cassie let out a laugh, shaking her head and leaning back. Once she’d settled down she wiped tears from her eyes and placed a hand on Noah’s shoulder. “Oh yes they do mysterious boy. Yes they do.” They sat in silence for a moment, listening to the gentle bump of music, and the lapping of the waves on the boat. Finally, Cassie spoke up. “So, what brings you over here?” she asked, reaching over and taking the bottle from Noah. Noah, eyes still focused on the sea, was starting to feel the warmth of the liquor spread through his core, the calm that came with the drink. “I came with my friend but, she ditched me,” he said softly as Cassie took another sip from the bottle and passed it back to him. He stared at it in silence for a moment, before taking his own swig, this time without the retching. “Doesn’t sound like a very good friend.” Noah shrugged. “I guess I’m not exactly perfect either,” Noah said, passing the bottle back to Cassie. Cassie chuckled. “Here’s a life lesson for ya. No one is. Look at me, I’m a giant liar. I’m lying to my friends, my mom, my...girlfriend. Honestly, this is probably the first time I’ve said any of that out loud. Woah.” Cassie took another swig and continued speaking. “I’m not who I say I am. Everybody thinks my mom is some big music producer in Japan but she’s not. She’s a nurse, at the hospital. I’m poor. Like, super poor, and my mom gives up everything so I can have a good education, and have opportunities she didn’t get, and the way I repay her is acting ashamed of her. None of my friends know who she is, she doesn’t even know where I am right now. I am the worst.” Noah looked at Cassie. This was...wow. This girl, one of the most well known figures on campus just spilled everything to him. She turned to meet his gaze, and laughed. “Your turn,” she said. He chewed his lip and grabbed the bottle, taking one big swig, wincing at the burn, before looking out over the ocean and saying what he’d come to know as truth for some time. “I’m gay. I think I’ve known for a long time, but, well, I don’t know. I’m just...I don’t know what to do. Nobody knows and, I don’t know what they’d say if they did. I don’t know if they’d still think I was me, and I just…” Noah’s speech trailed off into silence. Cassie chuckled and looked out over the waves. “Two liars and a bottle of vodka. Whatpair we make.”
