I hate using SAO as a reference point, but a Nerve Gear is probably the closest representation I could offer. But it doesn't effect your physical body, so you taste the food yes- but no you won't become full. You can pull the headset off at any time by going into the UI and setting yourself as AFK which will send you to a DOS Dashboard type thing, and as for setup. If you have a swivel chair and the VR headset, pop it on hit the switch and sit down.
