It's not about being underpowered more than not experiencing the full story. For example some scenes, objects, conversations could be locked behind these skills. That's why I took soul power, first of all I wanted to experience every supernatural option that was presented. Then perception since I didn't want my character to miss any clue, hidden item or otherwise. Usually on these kind of games, one example that I'm currently playing is "Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura". You need to do several playthroughs as different character archetypes to go through every option in the game that is usually limited by the distribution of your skill points on the many attributes listed.
