I don’t think reading the manga or watching the animated series is essential. While they are no doubt helpful, you can make a cohesive character easily by simply reading the fan wiki and asking questions so you get the right tone when developing your character’s concept. I would [i]recommend[/i] watching the animated series (as its quite easy to stream between Funimation and Crunchyroll), but I wouldn’t hard lock it as a “must”.
