I mean I prefer 3 to 4 but are people really giving 4 undue massive acclaim that 3 wasn't getting?
Yes. 4 was many people's first Persona game. Persona 3 was still very niche in a very niche spin of franchise while Persona 4 was so widely regarded that it launched an anime, it held up the Vita for a few months, had a dancing game spin off, and its cast was the focal point of a fighting game spin off. Now of course the argument can be made that the fighting game is because of both Persona 4 and Persona 3 but the game was called Persona 4 Arena and it wasn't until the Super Turbo version that the rest of the P3 cast was thrown a bone and put in. Persona 4 basically made Persona a more mainstream series (and no that isn't a bad thing) and even now it's not all that uncommon to hear someone be like "Yeah Persona 5 isn't Persona 4 so I didn't like it". The discussion on which cast is better happens all the time (spoiler alert: Persona 4 has the weakest cast) and that's always going to be a factor but for many, many people Persona 4 is the standard. I'm not saying Persona 4 is bad, that's insane. But is it the weakest of the 3, 4, 5 'trilogy'? Yeah. Yeah it is.
