A key element in the battle that time forgot. The martyr of a movement that would take years still to reach it's apex. Hardly any know of the young man who came from roses. Gabriel was a young man alike many other. Willing and able to fight for his country, proud of his part to play and devoted to the land that raised him. He would enter the army as many from small towns did; not only for glory and self-fulfillment, but to keep his aging parents well fed back home. He rose in ranks with surprising speed, as if born under a special star. There were more talented people certainly, more driven, more explosive. But none were as tenacious. By coming back time and time again, with his rag-tag group of patients behind him he rose in ranks, befriending those in high places and gaining more than a few favors to use. He climbed the ladder, protecting the border from the invading foes to the west, and yet he never saw the fight waiting back home. Having spent so long on the front-lines or in a warm fortress, he began to forget the hardship that those less lucky felt. He didn't notice the unfairness of how his beloved home worked, and why. He never saw the rebellion coming. Only a moment of peace before he went from killing pillagers, to being sent after the very people he protected. He wasn't a natural born leader, but he found himself in such a position regardless. When sent to recover a small town from the relentless guerrilla forces he had a choice to make. Most said a choice he made wrong. Turning on his own battalion, he made a stand; these were his people, not his enemies. After the order he gave to retreat was refused, he was once more forced to fight those he didn't want to. The men and women he spent so often tending to, repairing and saving; he now had to strike down. For if he didn't what hope did this small movement have? For peace he fought. Against his fellow countrymen he raged in hopes to find union among them. His battle so outnumbered let leave for his new allies. Escaping the assault of the king's army, the rebels fled to fight another day. While this battle would seem inconsequential in the history books, hardly mentioned if at all; it was vital. Without it the country would never change. Without it the people would remain underfoot, and without it Gabriel would never understand where he really stood in life. A fort was deemed too costly to hold, though the retreating forces would be eaten alive should they get caught in the woods. A small platoon was asked to stay behind, and Gabriel asked to lead the mission. While the fort was armed with explosives to put some dent in the invaders, he held them there alone as long as possible. The only physical fighter of the troupe he held enemies at a choke while his archers covered his sides. He fought to the end, surviving on a miracle. The fort was lost as planned, blown into the wind. But him and his men returned, accommodated on their survival, largely due to Gabrielle's ability to survive. Building a wall of his enemies corpses he made enough of a mess to reach a location far enough way to not be incinerated when their time was up. After 2 weeks of being counted as dead, him and every man he went down with returned.
