The Lightning seeks him out and strikes him, and through the Wizard's power he is transformed, gifted with the magical powers of the Old Gods:
S for the Wisdom of Solomon, granting Billy great knowledge, clairvoyance and omni-lingualism; H for the Strength of Heracles, granting him immense strength rivalling that of a Kryptonian's; A for the Stamina of Atlas, allowing him to go for days without sustenance, rest or exhaustion; Z for the Power of Zeus, reinforcing his magical powers and endurance, and allowing him to cast the Sky God's lightning; A for the Courage of Achilles, endowing him with incredible durability and optimism; M for the Speed of Mercury, gifting him with flight and otherworldly speed.
This doesn't come without drawbacks, however. Given that his powers are activated through speech, they are deactivated in the same way – by uttering the word of power, "Shazam." If he's tricked into saying it as Captain Marvel, he'll transform back into regular ol' Billy Batson, and that guy's pretty vulnerable. Not to mention that if he can't speak to begin with, whether he's gagged or choked or who knows what, he won't be able to transform at all. Yikes. Then there's magic; just as it giveth, it also taketh away. Hit him with powerful enough magic and it'll hurt. Hit him with Spectre, god-tier magic, and it'll suck.
[SUP][SUB]
S K I L L S
[/SUB][/SUP]
Billy's years on the streets have accustomed him to city life more than anyone else he knows – even Batman (Batman!). He knows his way around an urban environment better than most people would know their way around a tree. He's like... the Einstein of street smarts. If Einstein came up with a rudimentary insulated shelter made of magazines, wooden pallets and tin instead of something lame like that theory of relatability, or whatever it's called. Separated, Mary was adopted by Nick and Nora Bromfield, living a comfortable life with her wealthy foster family. Billy wasn't so lucky; taken in by his uncle, he was neglected and ultimately thrown out onto Fawcett City's streets, forced to eke out a meagre existence spent looking for somewhere dry to sleep. One night, everything changed. Led on by a mysterious man, his identity concealed by a wide-brimmed hat and high-collared coat, the ten year-old Billy was transported to a strange place located outside of existence – the home of the unknowable Wizard, who sat on a throne that overlooked everywhere, in every land. The Wizard had chosen Billy for an immense task, a burden greater than any man ever bore: to be the champion of good, the mightiest mortal on Earth... its greatest hero. Billy, weirdly humbled and immensely excited, accepted the burden, and so was told to speak the word of power – Shazam. With a flash of lightning and boom of thunder, Captain Marvel was born. With his new powers, Billy went on to fight many an evil. He used them to track down his sister, and reconnected with her. Able to share his abilities with those who were worthy, Mary became Mary Marvel, and his friend, Freddy Freeman, became Captain Marvel Jr. Over the years they were heroes both together and alone, and Billy repeatedly found himself pitted against two of his most dreaded enemies: Dr. Sivana, and Black Adam. Somewhere along the line, he met Kid Eternity. Superman's death crushed him. The Man of Steel was his hero, his idol; his death meant the death of goodness itself, and without it, Billy began to spiral into despair. But the teenager's optimism couldn't be repressed for long, and soon enough he decided that he wouldn't let Superman's death cripple him. No, it'd inspire him. He'd be a hero that the Man of Tomorrow would be proud of. So naturally, when his invitation to join the Teen Titans came, he accepted. Enthusiastically.
[SUP][SUB]
N O T E S
[/SUB][/SUP]
This version of Billy doesn't turn into an adult when he transforms; he instead turns into a "Greekified" version of himself – slightly taller, far more chiselled, and incredibly heroic.
