That's correct, someone who is still currently living. They could be working towards becoming a lich or it could be something they stumble upon? That parts more up to you. 

If you've read the full OC then you know you can make up whatever you'd like for a class, so that could even be something like "Lichborn" or "Lich in the making" lol
