They were a group of people, friends before they were heroes, and local to the area. They had decided the moment that their powers manifested that they would not use their powers for evil. Like the characters they had read about in comic books, the ones that had been in their movie theaters constantly for almost a decade now, they too would be sources of happiness and inspiration for the people around them. And they were. They became pillars of the community, helping to drop crime rates to the lowest that they had ever been. Within a year of their sudden appearance, they were working closely with the mayor, and their town loved them. There were a few zealots who thought they were freaks and wanted them gone, but… there were always zealots. The important thing was that they kept their home safe. They called themselves the Coalition of Heroes. It was coined by one of the members, and it stuck — for better or worse. Within two years, they had a headquarters that was all their own, and paid for by city taxes. They lived in the building, which was outfitted with bleeding edge, state of the art technology to make their job easier. The police force grew lazy, and the team handled almost everything that cropped up, though only the impossibly brave or the impossibly stupid stepped up against the team of people that possessed powers that made them gods. By the third year, their popularity was higher than ever. The people loved them to the point that other cities around the nation, even the world, were growing jealous. There were merchandising deals, people wanting interviews. Popular. Beloved. And then… it happened.
[sup]
⋙: T h e R e a l i t y
[/sup]

March 4th, 2017 A DVD. They had been sent a DVD. Oddly enough, the team of superheroes were relatively used to fanmail, but DVDs were… so outdated. Most of what the fans sent was through email, or on social media or something. This was new. Included with the disk had been a single note, requesting that the team watch together. And so they’d reluctantly gathered, and slipped the disk in. As it turned on, it showed a man wearing a plain mask. He was sitting in a wooden chair, the camera was focused on him in the center of a dimly lit room with cement walls. There were a few silent seconds of the masked man staring at the camera, before he began to speak: “What if I told you I was crazy? Would it be strange…? Would you believe me?” His voice was slow, carefully choosing each word, but nonetheless it commanded attention, filling the empty room. The man stood up from his chair and the camera followed him as he did so, before he began speaking again. “Or, what if I told you that it is YOU that breached the boundaries of reality, and that it is I who is perfectly sane. You people consider yourselves the shield against injustice, the protectors of this city, and you’ve got them fooled. But me? I see the truth. I see you for what you are! A facade. A joke!” He moved toward the camera, picking it up and shifting it so that it turned to face the other person in the room--the mayor of the town that the team had protected for so long, tied a chair not dissimilar to the one the masked man had been sitting in. In its new position, he sat the camera down, and began to speak again. “You recognize him, right? Mayor Brenton Wesley.” He paused, withdrew a knife from his pants pocket as the mayor whimpered into the gag tied around his mouth. “I’m gonna slit his throat, right here, right now. Live for this recording. He left a simple will, really, I helped him write it. Do you want to hear? Oh, I’m sure you do, I don’t know why I even asked…” Carefully placing the knife on the knee of the mayor, the masked figure reached into his pocket and withdrew a crumpled piece of paper, which he methodically unraveled before beginning to read: “To the people who live in the city that I’ve mayored over for nearly a decade, I will leave… distress. To the Coalition, the team of heroes who have so happily and selflessly protected myself and my city, I will leave chaos.” Immediately, the knife was snatched up off of the mayor’s knee and sliced across his throat. The effect was instant, and blood began to spurt everywhere, splattering onto the masked man’s clothes, the perfect white mask he wore, and even droplets landing on the camera lens. The man reached underneath the mayor’s chair and tipped it backwards, causing the corpse to fall, before he walked up to the camera and pulled out a handkerchief, dabbing off the splatters to make sure the picture was clear. “The Coalition… you brave few. You mighty few. You truly, truly consider yourselves a shield against injustice? Then I shall be the spear that will pierce your shield! You think you protect them from monsters? You don’t understand, you haven’t met a monster yet. I am the thing that lurks under the bed. I am what goes bump in the night.” He paused--his words had been getting heated, angry. He took a few seconds to compose himself, and then he began again, calmly. “There is no malice in what I’ve done here tonight. No underlying reason, no justification, I have no plan for world domination, I’m not extracting my revenge on the mayor for locking me up. No, no. It’s much more simple than that. I am just evil.. I am not just a villain, I am the villain.” He reached up and grabbed the base of the mask, slowly peeling it off his face. A streak of the mayor’s blood traced across his entire face from the backs of his fingers as he did so, and he licked at his lips. There was a smile on his lips as he stared into the camera. His face was undeniably attractive, but his eyes had an eerie look to them, almost as if they were detached from reality. “And now, I leave you with a single desperate cry--no, a plea for help.” The man dropped the mask and it seemed to fall in slow motion to the ground, splattering into the pool of blood at his feet. It felt like an eternity before he finally spoke again. “Please, stop me.”

[sup]
⋙: T h e R e p e r c u s s i o n s
[/sup]
Unbeknownst to the Coalition, the video was being played on almost every television station broadcasted in the city. They ran to find him, to fight him, to fix this like they always did. Of course they ran. And they did find him, their nameless villain did not make himself hard to find, standing atop a building that, almost in a cliche, was in the abandoned industrial portion of town. He was waiting for them. They fought him. They expected it to be one and done — like every other fight that they had fought up to this point — they had almost sent merely a single member of their team to apprehend the villain… but something was different about this one. He, like them, was Enhanced. He, like them, had power. He, unlike them, was not good. He, unlike them, used his powers for evil. He destroyed them, thrashed the team in a battle that left portions of the surrounding area… gone, decimated. It was only by sheer luck that they had fought in the abandoned section of town. After the battle, the villain stood there, virtually unharmed, and the heroes laid on the ground in pain and shock at the realization that they were no longer the only ones who had power. Standing over the Coalition, the villain spoke once more. “I have a rule, a code of honor. Whoever appeals to the law against their fellow man is either a fool, or a coward. For a wounded person shall say to his assailant: ‘If I live, I will kill you. If I die, you are forgiven.’ That is the rule of honor. I am not dead, and you are wounded. What will you do?” And with that, just like he’d appeared, he vanished in thin air, without a trace. Leaving nothing but chaos behind, just like he’d promised. In a matter of days after that, the people no longer loved or trusted them. They didn’t know if the Coalition was involved in the murder of the mayor, but some thought it. They were afraid, they didn’t want them anymore. The Coalition didn’t know what to do anymore. Luckily for them, an agent from a covert government entity was waiting for them at their home after the completion of their most recent mission. He's been sent there to be an adviser. A thinly veiled move by the US Government to supervise them.
[sup]
⋙: Rules
[/sup]

▹ Regular site rules: No Godmodding, No perfect characters, No cybering... etc, etc. ▹ There is no set posting order, but give other people a chance to respond to your characters.
