Largely, Nathaniel’s history has gained him a lot of respect. If the Coalition were headed by any other member, most people agree that the group would be looked upon even less favorably. Once a star athlete in high school, Nathaniel immediately enlisted in the US Military after graduation, despite offers from top colleges. He was focused on what he could to make the world a better place, and felt the military was the best option for this. He returned home at age 24, after being quietly awarded the Navy Cross, the US Military’s second highest award, for extreme heroism in the face of impossible danger.

Despite the accolade that the Navy Cross is, Nathaniel’s time in the Marines is largely classified. Particularly of note, is the mystery of what he did to obtain the Cross, and why he was almost immediately honorably discharged afterward. While his team was pinned down under fire from all angles, the young man’s power manifested, and he used them to save the surviving members of his squadron.

After this, he was awarded the Navy Cross, and sent home. The specifics of what happened were never shared by Nathan nor the men he worked with, and the military has no idea how they survived, only that they did and the entire team credited it toward Nathan, who [i]requested[/i] the discharge. Due to the classified nature of the mission he was participating in, most of his adventures are kept under wraps.

Due to his football player history, and his time in the military, Nathan is looked on fondly by most of the older people in the city. Children love him for his personality, and… he’s a living super hero.

It helps that he’s good looking, too.

The Sentinel has shown comprehensive control over all forms of magnetism and utilizes this control to manipulate ferrous metals and achieve a variety of effects:

[list][*][b]Magnetic force-fields[/b]: Able to protect himself with an electromagnetic force-field that he can expand to large areas; the larger the area the more strain it puts on him. He is able to use these force fields to trap enemies and levitate objects in the air.
[*][b]Magnetic armor[/b]: the fibers in his uniform, engineered by team member Austin Daley, are metallic in nature. As a result, he can reinforce them with magnetic fields, making his clothing more like armor and near bulletproof.
[*][b]Magnetic flight[/b]: Nathaniel is capable of sustaining flight for very long distances and at varying speeds, by interlacing with magnetic field lines in his immediate surroundings.
[*][b]Magnetic rays[/b]: The ability to shoot powerful rays and electromagnetic pulses. These can destroy both magnetic and non-magnetic objects, and is his main attack against other humans — other than just dropping large metal objects on them, or flinging bullets at them.
[*][b]Metal/matter manipulation[/b]: Nathaniel can manipulate metal at near the atomic level, making it take different forms. He is capable of indirectly some non-metallic objects via metal ores they may contain. This causes a great strain on him, and he tends to stick with magnetism.[/list]

There is no questioning that he is a powerful Enhanced; easily in the upper echelons, his main weakness is quite frankly himself. His powers cause great strain to him, and has led him to work hard to maintain physical form; and if his body is weakened, so too are his powers. Additionally, moving larger objects pushes him to his limits, and he often immediately collapses after pushing his limits. Through training, he aspires every day to improve and grow stronger. The weaker his body is, the less he is able to access certain portions of his powers; it becomes more and more of a strain to, for example, manipulate and maintain his force-fields, and if he collapses from exhaustion, so to do the fields he was maintaining.

While his close quarters combat skills are nothing to sneeze at, due to his years of service in the military, where Nathaniel really shines is when the elements are with him. When metal is within his ever-growing range, his power ceiling disappears, and his ability to fight increases tenfold. He prefers not to use lethal force, or even damaging force, and instead has a method of pinning enemies down so they can’t escape, tying them away with metal knots made from pipes.

While not on the clock, he dresses very comfortably, tending to wear light clothes — t-shirts, shorts, etc. He will sometimes go out in uniform to entertain school children, and attend assemblies.
