Annalise Jones sat behind the wheel, quietly listening to each word that was being said as she sped down the road. Solana, on the other hand, sat in the passenger seat with her feet resting on the dashboard and her usual music blaring through the headphones that covered her ears. She kept her head turned towards the window the entire time, wanting to avoid a conversation with her mother. In fact, she had barely spoken a word to her recently divorced parent since they'd stepped foot onto the plane just a few hours ago. "You can't ignore me forever," her mother had said after she received the keys to her rental car, "I'm only doing what's best for you." When the two women finally arrived at their destination, Solana nearly lost her shit. Her eyes narrowed and her top lip curled as she peered out of the window, taking in all of her surroundings. Instead of hanging out with her friends and living her best life before it would be time for her to head off to college, she was going to be spending her Summer vacation here. "Welcome in Hell," Solana read directly from the sign, rolling her eyes at the spelling and grammatical errors. "Yeah, this is Hell, for sure." Without another word, Solana powered off her cell phone and tucked it into her pocket, got out of the car, and popped the car trunk. She hadn't packed much; she didn't want to waste any of her good clothing since she'd essentially be living outside. "This is for you own good, sweetie," Solana's mother called out the window as Solana slung her bags over her shoulder and headed towards the unattractive entrance. The young woman nearly puked at the sight of the dirty lake. "I'll see you in a few weeks, okay? I love you." As Annalise put her car into reverse and began to head back the way she came, she held her hand out of the window and waved in her daughter's direction. "Go fuck yourself," Solana muttered under her breath, but waved to her mother nonetheless. Soon, Solana found herself standing alone. She noticed a handful of other kids walking through the entrance ahead of her, so she sighed and followed behind them while mentally preparing for what was to come.
