Bio: Thozgild is an arrestingly unusual and mysterious character. The exotic polymath's youth and background are virtually unknown, though he is believed to have arisen from the peasantry of the foreign port city of Helarx. Twenty years ago, Thozgild had established himself as a wealthy merchant lord with a lucrative trading enterprise. Modern observers might best describe the Merchant of Helarx as a vendor of snake oil, for his wealth was earned in the sale of medicinal and alchemical reagents, tinctures, and potions from exotic lands. Thozgild's frequent travels to far-flung lands exposed him to a great many unusual customs and ideas. With his great wealth, Thozgild amassed an immense collection of artifacts, specimens, tomes, scrolls, tapestries, and other curiosities. During one trip to some distant and barbarous land, Thozgild is reported to have imbibed a curious medicine offered to him from the indigenous folk that forever altered his mind. The Merchant of Helarx henceforth acquired a swaying gait and an accent akin to that of no known country. His interests shifted away from mercantile endeavors and he instead devoted his time to the study of arcane subjects. Thozgild is known across Galmaora as a polymath. He is reported to speak as many as twelve languages and is well versed on the tenets of numerous religions and cults. In recent years, however, the city of Helarx fell under the control of the Xalform Crusade. The cosmopolitan port of Helarx was no longer the tolerant city-state that Thozgild had called home for most of his life. The fanatical inquisitors charged with governing this land became increasingly hostile to the strange merchant lord and his unorthodox interests, but deigned to spare him due to the tax revenue his trade enterprise generated in Helarx. Even so, the Crusade's bloodlust for unbelievers could only be stayed for so long, and eventually the Xalform rulers of Helarx decided that Thozgild's heretical beliefs could not be tolerated for any amount of gold, and so decided that he was to be beheaded. Thozgild, however, had long been preparing his flight from the clutches of the Crusade. Through his study of the cosmos and the skies, the Polymath of Helarx was able to predict the coincidence of thick fog on a moonless night. On the night when a torch-bearing guard could scarcely see ten paces in front of him, Thozgild sprang his plan into action. Thozgild's servants - shod in thick leather socks so as to conceal all sound of their footfalls - carried litters laden with as much of his extensive collection as they could carry from their master's compound to three ships waiting in the harbor. But when a servant tripped over a cobblestone in the dark and toppled a litter full of glass vessels, the city's guards were alerted to Thozgild's flight. With a hoard of fanatics on his heels, Thozgild had no choice but to abandon more than half of his beloved collections and cast off into the inky fog. Thozgild's ships have sailed beyond the reach of the Xalform Crusade, and the Polymath of Helarx has charted a course to a new home. Settling on a remote and oft-forgotten territory of the tolerant Galovian Empire, Thozgild's ships sail now across the Timorous Sea to the Isle of Fray.
