Goblin Skrik Skrik was able to do it. He felt a surge of satisfaction as he felt the horned rabbit weaken under the influence of the poison. That feeling soon quieted to something like relief as he watched the numbed creature peacefully fall unconscious and then perish as it bled out. It looked… peaceful. He tried not to dwell on exactly why he was relieved. Instead, he began to take the body apart as soon as he was certain it was dead. He found the wound in its neck to be a good starting point and began to cut shallowly from there, cutting around the neck with his knife and then cutting from the front of the throat down the belly to the point between the leg joints. Then he cut crossways from there down the large part of each leg before cutting around the ankle. With this done he did a similar crossway cut at the foreleg joint line and the wrists. After this he was able to pull the skin completely off. With it all in one piece it could be made into any number of things. He set it aside as he began to use the clean nails of his right hand to sever connective tissue and pull out sections of meat, eating them one at a time while memorizing their position and size. From this, he could understand the movements of the horned rabbit even more thoroughly. Once he had mostly finished his meal, he removed the horn and examined it closely while he chewed the marrow out of one of the rabbit’s smaller bones. It had a hard outer surface but it looked like it had a small amount of marrow as well. That gave him an idea. But, first he had to find a place to work safely. His hunt had taken time. There was still time in the day, but not much, and his left hand was only just starting to regain its feeling. He would need a better way to deliver the poison, ideally one that didn’t poison him too. He took all of the parts of the rabbit that remained, mostly the horn and bones and organs, and wrapped them in the hide. He would go looking for either another rabbit, ideally trying the same method only without the poison on his hand, or for a place with quiet water. Then he stopped. There was something that still needed to be done. He wasn’t even fully aware of why he felt the need to do it but he knelt down, pulled the horned rabbit’s skull out of his hide bag and looked into its empty eye sockets. Then he nodded and used his claw-like nails to dig a small hole at the base of the berry bush. He placed the skull into this hole and buried it. “Let your strength feed others. Never go hungry. Thank you.” Skrik whispered. Without saying anything else Skrik headed into the forest, following narrow paths that twisted and wove through the woods, and seeking either more rabbit or water. Yet, even as he searched, his mind was active. There had been several types of berries growing in the place where he found the horned rabbit. It had only been eating one. He took mental notes on the other berries as sources of alternative poisons and kept his eyes and ears open for anything unusual, especially for signs of nightfall and any trees with limbs close enough to the ground for easy climbing.
