This was the only thought on the young woman’s mind as she went through the motions of the day: gathering the last of her items onto her luggage, arranging the care of her apartment for the time she’d be gone, summoning and getting into the limo, all the way down to the airport and the nearly six-hour flight to Las Vegas. No matter how hard she tried, the imposing imminence of her upcoming nuptials was eating her alive like a parasite. The fact that she was even getting married was a miracle in itself, as pointed out by the many surprised and shocked replies she’d gotten back from those who knew her when the invitations had been received. Contrary to most girls, Cole had never even considered the idea of marriage. In her mind, what was the point of making a big deal of getting married using the excuse of “celebrating love” when the true intention was to impress people with how big and lush the wedding would be? If the two people were really in love, what would signing a stupid piece of paper and throwing a party really matter? Why bother tainting something beautiful with complicated legalities that could only serve to turn things bitter if they ever came to an end? To her, it was frankly a silly thing to do. But, like many other things, Darien had been the one to change that mindset. The man she’d known since her childhood, and the one she’d fallen in love with nearly two years before, hand managed to turn the anti-wedding girl into an upcoming blushing bride. Darien Monterrosa was a dream of a man: smart, caring, handsome, with a well-off family and a heart of gold… Not to mention her parents absolutely adored him! She’d be a fool to turn him down, and the luckiest woman in the world to accept him. This was why, the moment he got down on one knee and proposed to her in front of close friends and family, Cole hadn’t thought about it twice before crying out a very loud YES! She was excited to get married, of course. Her love for Darien was ever-present and ever-growing, because why else would she had agreed to get engaged to such a cupcake if she didn’t love him? Yet with every day that went by, the levels of Cole’s nervousness were raised just a tad more, pushing the limits of the woman’s sanity. Her close friends had been nothing short of incredibly supportive, constantly expressing their comfort and reassuring her that it was completely normal for the bride to start feeling “pre-wedding jitters” -as they called it- on the days before the wedding. Unfortunately, words were not enough to soothe this particular bride, who instead had fallen back on her old habit of smoking weed behind Darien’s back to control these unwelcome “jitters”. The pot did its job and took the edge off, making her all the more mellow and chill about the whole affair. But as soon as she was without it, the second thoughts began to creep in, and doubt began to cloud her already-foggy mind. At this point, Cole wanted nothing more than for the whole thing to be done and over with. It was in this mindset of happiness, doubt and nervousness that Cole landed in the LAS airport that Wednesday before the wedding and was driven to the Seara Resort and Casino. The ride from the airport to the hotel, situated right at the heart of the famous Vegas Strip, had done her no favors, only serving to increase her anxiousness instead. Taking in a deep breath that seemed to suck in all the air of the limo, Cole exited the vehicle, made her way to her father’s hotel and straight for the room that would be her home for the next five days. Trying her hardest to ignore the slightly-shaking hands, she shot Darien and her wedding party invitees a text that she’d landed and the room she would be in so they could drop by to say hi. She needed a moment of privacy to compose and pull herself together before any of the guests -or worse, the groom- arrived. There was no way in hell she would let any of them see her in this state. When she’d reached her room, she quickly opened the door to her room, slipped inside and quickly closed it. Sighing, Cole dropped her carry-on bag on the floor and made her way straight to the balcony, where she took a seat and began to look for something in her bag. Out she pulled a dainty navy blue glass pipe, a dime of weed and a fancy, rainbow-bejeweled Zippo lighter. Wasting no time, Cole quickly placed the weed on the pipe, flicked on the lighter, put the pipe up to her lips and lit up, taking puff after puff after puff. Soon enough, the delicious feel of the cannabis smoke began to fill up her lungs, offering her the comfort she so desperately needed. She closed her eyes, a stream of smoke coming out of her mouth as she let the THC do its magical work. Of course, deep down, Cole knew she would need more than a few puffs of Mary Jane to take this growing edge off.
