Her disappointment wasn't entirely fueled by the numerous protesters that were lining the streets, hurling insults at the devastated Survey Corps. Waste of coin and lives, they would shout! The Survery Corps should be abolished, they screamed! No, Tanner found herself disappointed, once more, that she was unable to spot the woman she had been searching for most of her life. Where in the name of the Walls was this woman?! There hadn't even been records of a Harwell dying on the battlefield in the last several years! It proved, like always, to be a major let down for Tanner, as if she was a child refused the chance to have another sweet before dinner. Sighing once the last cart disappeared through the gate, Tanner turned away from the crowd with her hands in herpockets, disappearing down an alley way.
And just like that, everything changed.
A deep rumbling shook the ground beneath Tanner, quite close to throwing her off balance as she struggled to regain her footing. In the sky, a vibrant flash of light shined, giving the appearance of lightning striking the wall that surrounded the district. The light had been bright enough to force Tanner to bring her arms upwards to block out the light, yet even then, the random explosion wasn't what worried Tanner; her face adorning a shocked expression. With an iron grip on the wall, a massive titan had been hovering over the fifty meter wall meant to protect humanity from the gigantic threats outside. It was colossal in size, appearing as if it had no skin covering its flesh, and cold eyes that stared back at the horrified townsfolk, whom were but a tiny speck compared to the titan. Reeling a leg backwards, the unknown titan smashed its foot into the outwards gate, and promptly shattering humanity's defenses against their eternal enemy. Pieces of the gate crashed into the district, not only smashing into buildings, but also people, coating the streets in a thin paint of human blood. Their bodies–if you could call them bodies still–were flattened beneath the ancient stonework, while their friends and loved ones looked on unable to do anything. The screams of the fleeing populace had begun to be drowned out by the screams of the dying, as swarms of titans began their swooping descent into the district. Tanner looked onward in the direction of the carnage, her hands tightly clenched into fists. The girl's feet refused to budge, but Tanner knew she needed to move–to find her parents and get out of the district alive. "Damn it. Damn it, damn it, damn it!" Tanner continuously shouted, fighting herself to a full on sprint deep into now-titan territory.
