I never particularly felt like Tobey was a solid Peter Parker either – Holland I feel has a good script and good direction for both roles, but I think Garfield gets more criticism than he honestly deserves given what we had experienced [on film] with Spider-Man up to that point. We actually saw a Queens accent, the mainstream personality of Spider-Man, and some other aspects that Homecoming basically owes for getting the boat going cinematically speaking. Amazing Spider-Man had the wit, energy, and cast the character needed. It’s just a shame the studios got greedy and Garfield pissed off the wrong people. In another universe, it’d be Garfield in the MCU without any of the stupid Iron Man sidekick bullshit. And it's a damn shame.
I'll hold my hands up and say I enjoyed Homecoming more than any of the Spider-Man movies we've been given. That said, I would have given the film more props if it had stuck to its guns with Peter rejecting the Iron Man suit at the end. Tony basically just giving him the suit afterwards difuses any real sort of growth in Peter's character. In the context of repurposing the ideas of power vs responsibility I'm fine with the suit and Iron Man being there. Most of the changes to the source material work for me, though Flash just seems mishandled more than miscast. For me personally there's more substance than just 'Spider-Man for the Twilight Crowd' which is all ASM really boiled down to for me. And Vulture is great.
