In other news: Marvel, don't you fuck me...

That better not be a setup for some stupid twist. I've already pretty much sworn off Marvel altogether, but if this turns out to be another bait and switch, I'll......get upset and complain about it on the internet, I guess. Speaking of complaining about comic books on the internet....
I get the feeling that Bendis genuinely doesn't know or care how the DC universe works. After turning Superman into a hapless sad-sack who lets absolutely everyone walk all over him in his Man of Steel miniseries, now he's got J'onn telling Clark "hey, it might be a good idea to take over the world so the other aliens will like Earth more." Fucking....what? Granted, my knowledge of Martian Manhunter isn't encyclopedic, but last time I checked he wasn't from the Sinestro school of the benevolent dictator. It's bad enough that everyone in Superman's franchise is suddenly acting way out of character, don't bring the rest of the League into this. Also, having the Fortress of Solitude get destroyed really loses its impact when he can just grow a new one immediately after. From what I can tell, it's gonna be exactly the same as the regular Fortress, but now it's in the Bermuda Triangle instead of the North Pole. Ooooh, aaaah. And the book's ending is incredibly jarring-- he tries to go fly off into space only to find out that Earth is suddenly in the Phantom Zone, even though he starts the book in space, and Bendis either doesn't sign-post when this change happens or doesn't do it well enough for readers to pick up on it. On the plus side, we do get to see Superman actually doing awesome Superman stuff, even if it's only for a gag as he keeps breaking away from his "hey, go take over the world" convo with J'onn to punch out a monster or rescue some kids. And he starts off the comic kicking the shit out of a Dominator fleet, which is kinda cool. So at the very least, the comic meets the minimum requirement of "show the main character actually being awesome at least once," at which the Man of Steel miniseries utterly failed. Generally speaking, I'm not a fan of Bendis-man so far. It's not completely without merit, but I don't think he has a good handle on any of the characters, and everyone speaking in that old Ultimate Spider-Man/MCU-inspired "sooo, that's like, a thing, or whatever?" dialogue makes my teeth grind together. Really hoping that once the novelty of having a Marvel guy on a DC book wears off, they'll put him somewhere that he can do less damage, or he'll at least realize that the two brands aren't the same and shouldn't be written as such.
