When on task, he is a focused and methodical individual who is capable of staying oriented on the work at hand and is excellent at problem solving, but in slower periods he is prone to lethargy and committing to personal interests that do not coincide with his duties. Something of a day dreamer, he often thinks of ideas, often to do with creative writing or sketching, in a tablet he keeps with him most of the time both during free time and work. Despite this, he is a pragmatic individual who is capable of breaking down a situation into its base components and making decisive decisions on the fly based on 11 years of career-related experience and managing water treatment facilities in small municipalities. He spends much of his free time in the gym, although this seems to be more to keep off extra weight and to maintain energy and alertness than any particular fitness goal. Sociable and well-liked by most, he often keeps personal opinions to himself and only asserts himself when he deems a situation to be serious enough. He often resorts to chemical assistance to help fall asleep due to suffering from mild insomnia. Has had experience retrofitting spacecraft with newer systems while employed on Luna by Honshu International. BACKGROUND: Born on Canadian Forces Base Trenton, a major air force base in Southern Ontario, Canada. His father, Major Jim Ericson of 8 Wing, was a transport pilot that had received numerous commendations for his contributions to peacekeeping and disaster relief operations across the globe. His mother, Suzan Ericson, owned a local bar that catered to CAF personnel stationed on CFB Trenton. A fairly successful student without any lofty goals and a near-perfect attendance record in Centennial High School, Belleville, Ian decided to pursue water treatment technology as a career path due to a difficult job market and the strain on clean drinking water across the globe necessitating skilled operators and thus ensuring job security. Enrolled in Seneca College in Toronto for environmental engineering and graduated with honours, earning coop placements in Huntsville and Dryden. While on campus in Seneca, Ian worked as a convenience store clerk a few blocks from his college and was robbed on December 6, 2099 and received a gunshot wound to his right shoulder that had him admitted to Mt. Sinai Hospital, prompting him to experience the turn of the century on New Year’s Eve in a hospital bed. After recovery, Ian fell into self-medicating with alcohol to help manage pain and post-traumatic stress disorder, falling behind on his studies but still managing to graduate and subsequently move into the water treatment industry, working odd jobs where he could while still battling his addiction to alcohol. It eventually caught up to him and he was against hospitalized in 2111 after three years, where a proper treatment plan was established and he allowed himself to follow medical advice to recovery. Work was harder to come by after his release and clean bill of health until an opportunity to work on Luna came up with Honshu International, a Chinese-based conglomerate that had been one of the pioneers in solar colonization efforts. The money was lucrative, but it was difficult to find trained people willing to live off-world for 5 year terms and desiring proper work experience and a strong financial backing to build a life from, Ian chose to accept a position with Honshu and was sent to Armstrong, Luna, six months later where he’d spend the next 5 years working his way up to lead operator and had gained invaluable experience in the challenge associated with water and wastewater treatment on the moon and of various spacecraft, all of which needed to recycle the same water constantly instead of relying on fresh source. His skills became invaluable and soon his name came across Goldberg Tech’s offices, prompting him to apply for a position aboard Project Elysium. Ian elected to leave Earth behind due to a combination of wishing to be a pioneer who could be a part of the greatest event in history, sour memories of life on Earth, and a genuine concern about environmental degradation of the home world.
