The Helroxi lost any element of surprise with the entirety of their fleet perusing the Merkurian Sea. The Tyrians prepped a half dozen 12" gun batteries at Landorf as well as mobilized the fleet to ail. The Helroxi fell right into the trap, as their tactical objective was "to bombard the navy Dock Yards of Landorf where the Tyrian Fleet and current Mothballed Battleship is believed to be as well as to cause panic in the Tyrian Capital and damage the tyrian docks." While Helroxi Naval High Command was aghast at the idea of sending out battleships for "coastal raids" while the enemy fleet was present--orders could not be ignored. At 0912 on June 4th, the Helroxi 1st Fleet under Commodore Arman Oxferd was spotted fourteen nautical miles northwest of Landorf. The Helroxi 1st Fleet was comprised of the 1891 battleship HIN Dimitri, 4 armored cruisers, 7 light cruisers and 7 destroyers. The Imperial Fleet was comprised of the battleship SMS Wolfram, 4 armored cruisers, 4 light cruisers, and five destroyers. Two of the destroyers--still working up--were left at port. The Imperial Fleet headed due east and at 0955 turned due West and headed for the Helroxi before turning south to cross the Helroxi "T" as the Helroxi moved for Landorf. The first shot was from Battery #4 at Landorf, offering a near miss on the Helroxi cruiser HIN Lorgen. Tyrian coastal battery, Landorf, 1905 At 0958 the first ship to ship combat began, with the HIN Dimitri opening a salvo with her 4 10" guns and being met with a resounding salvo from the SMS Wolfram's 4 12" guns, though one misfired and was not able to have the breech opened due to pressure for the remainder of the battle. This is widely considered the first time in history battleships have engaged one another in combat. At 1011 hours, the Tyrian destroyer SMS Lancer was struck by a concentrated barrage by a Helroxi armored cruiser and at 1014 the captain ordered all hands abandoned ship. The battle was an incomprehensible bloodletting. The Tyrians, supported by six 12" field batteries had effectively come to the battle with the firepower of three battleships--sinking 4 destroyers, 2 light cruisers and the Helroxi armored cruiser HIN Peytrin. The HIN Dimitri was so badly damaged that her boilers billowed an inky black smoke during the retreat. And the HIN Questr had to be abandoned in the Merkurian Strait after her aft magazine exploded. While neither battleship was damaged, both the Dimitri and Wolfram were so mauled as to be rendered useless without repair for the next months. Engineers on the Wolfram refused to board her after inspecting her magazines and believing them to be volatile. Only on June 8th would they come back aboard to begin repairs. In the North, Helroxi High Command ordered an Offensive. Men retreated in flocks. They took days to find their units after being blitzed by heavy artillery fire. The Tyrians gave little quarter, given their advantage. Only Major General Kylov's brief counter attack during the second day of the war gave any hope to Helroxi forces on the front. The following order came down from Flegleen:
TO: Army Group Reselven SUBJECT: Off. Operations in Tyrian Theater "Due to lack of artillery weaponry a sustained defensive battle is impossible, as such we will use superior forces and veterans of the first Tyro-Helroxi War to stop and hopefully push back the Tyrian Advancing Armies. The 90th Cavalry will be used as a scouting force to discover the weakest of the 3 invading armies. After the discovery of the weakest, the 110th,111th,112th and 113th Guard units will be used along with the 90th Cavalry to stop the advancing Tyrian army and push them back should they retreat the main objective is to capture weaponry such as guns, ammo and field guns and Tyrian officers as prisoners. While the 108th and 109th Guards will begin defending the city of Trevten. If all are believed to be of equal strength then the 108th and 109th will still begin to defend the city of Trevten. Meanwhile the other units will lead a combined assault on which ever of the armies is closest to the north. Should the Tyrian army be stopped and begin retreating, the main objective will be to capture any weapons, ammo and most importantly field guns left behind."
The 90th Cavalry, a total of only 8,000 men was now given the task of "discovering the weakness" of nearly a quarter million troops spread across 1,100 miles of terrain. Due to this, Kylov's cavalry effectively became useless--with the regiment being torn apart and sent to scout individual sectors in groups of two and three. Given that in the span of 24 hours, Kylov's men had only just just started to poke and prod Tyrian lines (taking horrendous casualties in the process, often being overwhelmed by sustained rifle power), an offensive started on the same day with the 110th, 111th, 112th and 113th Guard divisions--totaling 80,000 troops. Tyrian soldiers report "running out of ammunition and having to kill Helroxi soldiers with their bare hands." The momentum would swing back and forth, with huge offensives of 5,000 and 9,000 men charging and counter charging. On June 11th, June 12th and June 13th the smoke from the Melhorn S55 batteries was so thick, the men could not see to continue loading the guns. At dawn on the 13th, 11th men of the 110th and 111th Guards division charged and overran sixteen Tyrian positions--all of them poorly defended due to the Tyrians being constantly on the offensive. The battle on the 13th was the most bloody thus far, with 19,000 Tyrian and Helroxi died and dying in the fields around Tretzen.
