Technically he was a vampire heir. Because he was his sire's strongest child he was supposed to inherit his father's kiss when the asshole met the dawn. The problem was that his father was an asshole who hated him and saw him only as a threat to his throne. Griffin had no desire to control the whole damn state. He didn't want to be responsible for so many lives. Which was probably a good thing since he couldn't seem to lead even a small group of lesser supernaturals. All he wanted really was his freedom and being a leader meant he would be out from under his sire's thumb. Sort of. He would still have to answer to the older man but not as often.
